was wondering if i should do a dawn wash on my car to strip any previous wax, not sure if i have any layer of wax since its been about 7 or more months since my last one... or can i just wash with regular car wash and apply new wax on my car?

I would use an automotive soap and clean the car thoroughly, then wax it with 1-2 coats!

I would dawn soap wash, then clay bar it, and follow with a good wax.

Yeah. Use dish washing soap whenever you want a clean base to start a good wax job. Just don't use it too often.

If you only wax every 6-8 months, I would seriously consider a system like Zaino. It's a bit time consuming (4 hours) to apply it the first time, but after that you're only looking at reapplying once per year. It's perfect for people who don't like to or can't wax their cars often. Once you apply the full system, you simply wash your car and give it a quick spray wipe with their (Z6) detail spray to keep it looking glossy. Easy as can be.

skituck's method is what I would do. Especially clay bar.

IMO there's no need to dawn wash because
1. There's no wax that will last 7 months. Sealants are usually losing durablity at the 4-6mo range (unless you maintain by layering).
2. Since claying the car will remove contaminants embedded in the paint, it will easily remove any residue from previous waxes or sealants if used with properly.
3. Dawn will remove oils making your rubber and trim look $hitty over time.

ok true, so I guess just a regular wash with car wash soap then... the wax i last used was that Meguair's NXT, its a polymer based, and I live in TX, very hot, so I doubt my wax lasted anything close to 7 months...

is there an alternative method to clay bar, no auto stores down here sells that stuff, I'm so pissed... please let me know of an alternative method I can use besides claybar...

You should be able to find the clay bar at Wal Mart or Target. I would be surprised if they didn't have it. I don't think there is an alternative to the clay bar. It really takes a rough surface and makes it totally smooth. Its worth it. If you can find it where you live order it online somewhere.

you sure walmart has it? I was there yesterday and couldn't find it... what does it come in a box or can or what, and what brand is it. If you can describe it for me, maybe i can find it...
