I'm actually going to clean mine this weekend. I'm planning on blowing all the loose dirt out with an air compressor then wiping it down with a damp towel. If someone has any better ideas I would like to know.
With todays engines, You can just blow the loose dirt away, then spray the engine with Autoglym engine cleaner. Spray it liberly over everything nd let it set for a fe minutes. Now aggitate the worse spots with a stiff brush and rince with water. You may need to repeat thie process afew time until tis been thourly clean.
Now while the engine is still wet spray Autoglym vinyl and rubber care over the entire engine.
Close the hood and you are done.

There are a couple of different products on this site...they all work really well but of course you need to be careful where you are spraying them.

I use a very mild degreaser on muddy spots, and gently scrub any other dirt thats let off with a damp towel and then wipe everything down with a dry towel afterwards. Tire shine wipes work very well for hoses and such.
