To clean and shine the wheel you need a metal polish like the p21s finish restorer http://secure.detailedimage.com/Merc...ory_Code=Metal. This will clean the wheels and exhaust tips great as well as give them a great shine. After you've cleaned the wheels I highly recomend a wheel wax/sealant like Poorboy's World Wheel Sealant http://secure.detailedimage.com/Merc...ory_Code=Wheel or Wheel Wax http://secure.detailedimage.com/Merc...ory_Code=Wheel. Each one does a great job of keeping the high temperature brake dust off as well as water marks, etc. Saves me tons of time each week when I clean and the brake dust just falls off instead of always using the metal polish. However you're wheels have grime on them you gotta start off with the metal polish.
Yes Chrome Polish will work on rims, there is different kinds of metal polish abrasive vs. non abrasive. If your metal/chrome needs a medium to heavy cleaning (assuming you've already washed them well) then I would recommend the P21S Finish Restorer, because this has a mild abrasiveness to it. If you have very clean wheels that only need to be just shined really I would recomend the Clear Kote Metal Polish. They are both great but serve very slightly different functions.
After the wheels are cleaned and shined I would put the Wheel Sealant or Wheel Wax on there, they both work great as well. This small preventative step makes a huge difference in the long term care of the wheel as well as giving it a great look. It helps stop contamination, high temperature brake dust and other road grime from building up.
