Cleaning nightmare?

Last weekend I was cleaning my car. After doing the exterior I was working on the dash and must have brushed up against one of the roof pillars with my dirty hand (maybe it's not called a pillar - one of the 4 struts that connect the roof to the hood/trunk and border the rear/front windshields). The front pillars are covered in a soft fabric and I put a smear of black junk right on the fabric. It must be black tire dust mixed with wax and/or Aerospace 303. How do I get this stuff out of the fabric?

Try the Aerospace 303 in a spot that is below the dash to make sure it does not affect the colour, this means you will have to pull the piece off. Or Simple Green may work. I have used a product Lifter1 found at Pep Boys and Auto Zone in a Blue with Yellow top aerosol can, which WORKS GREAT! My wife swears by it on carpet and upholstery, it even removes pen marks....

Re: Cleaning nightmare?

First, before applying any solvents, try using some masking tape....LIGHTLY.... to remove any loose, not ground-in particles. It is important not to press the masking tape too frimly into the fabric becases you may damage the fabric liner by pulling away too many fibers and cause fraying.

I can't remember what the fabric looks like in this area, but if fraying still occurs, use one of those electric lint removers (from Sharper Image) to smooth the fabric. If the fabric is sturdy, you can press the tape in and get out a lot of the stain.
