Shift **** on the 04 6MT

So I've done som searching and have found conflicting solutions. I just bought a new shift **** to replace my factory one. My question is does the OEM one just unscrew off? I have read that it does but you can mess up the "linkage" if you try to hard. Anyone have any experience doing it that can pass me some knowledge on it? Also I'm assuming you do it with the car in neutral?

Thanks pimps

Yes it does screw off. There is a little tab you have to release on the shift boot.

It is on there VERY tight. I got a pair of vice grips and held the shifter straight as to not damage the tranny in any way.
