Made some runs in poor DA yesterday, not good
For a while now, I've been wanting to run in some warm temps to see how badly it would impact my car's times. The worst DA I've run in is ~1,500' and the best is sea level. Well, I learned poor DA affects these cars pretty badly. This go around I was running on my slightly heavier (+4 to 5 lbs) and much wider 18s vs my OEM 17s. I've never run on these. Everything else was my normal setup (1/4 tank fuel, no spare, empty trunk).
The conditions yesterday were:
Track elevation at 900'
75-78 degrees (track temp at 82-85 degrees)
dew point at 54 to 56 degrees
baro pressure at 30.00-30.03
Calculated DA was in the 2400-2600' range
My best run was a 14.72@96.59mph with a 2.28 60 foot. Ouch! Even worse was I had 15.0@96mph with 2.35 60' and a 15.4@95mph with a 2.6 60' (spun horribly, car upshifted way early)
Prior to today, my car hadn't run any slower than a 14.69. The lines were really long so every run was on a very heat soaked motor. It's just painful to know the car can run so slowly. Those 18s suck out a bit more juice than I thought too. Ugly. Using ricer math, the 14.72@96.59mph corrects out to a 14.29@99.45mph. We'll see.

SOB! After getting home from running at the strip, I filled up my car. From that point on, the car felt flat and boggy, much like it did while I was at the strip. Low rpm throttle response was junky and shifts lost a lot of crispness. I figured the boggy performance at the strip was the heat and the boggy performance on the street was possibly due to some crappy gas. I ran through that tank and saw about 15% lower mpgs. Bad gas I thought. I filled up at another station and the car still felt boggy. WTF? Did I hurt my car at the strip? Was it suffering the same fate as Klubbs VQ (worn rings). Above 4000rpms, the car felt pretty normal. Below that it felt like it was down on power and on occasion it would stumble right off throttle. I now figured maybe the MAF sensor was dirty.
I popped my hood last night and to my surprise, two of the four latches on the airbox weren't clipped. When the motor moved under load, the airbox covers would seperate ever so slightly. I thought back and remembered that the night before I ran, I had pulled the box out to clean the filter. I was in the process of reinstalling when I heard my 4 y/o wailing so I buttoned up the car quickly and closed the hood. Apparently in my haste, I forgot to secure the left side clips. I secured them last night and the car drives like it use to to. All that nice HR y-pipe throttle response has been restored. Shifts are nice, firm, and direct. Hopefully the MPGs will go back up too. I don't know if the mistake slowed the car down at the strip, but it is annoying knowing it wasn't set up as planned.
