running 15x8 welds w/ 5.5 backspacing

running 15x8 welds w/ 5.5 backspacing

Well after installing my slick/drag radial I realized the stock nonbrembo calipers still rub a little on the inner radius of the rim. The solution to this from my thoughts is to still run with a spacer and mill the lug nuts down to allow the shank to be longer than an average shank lug nut. I will secure the spacer to the rim via countersunk conical seat allen bolts. Its kinda hard to explain a pictures would sum it up alot easier. Will post up some info and pics in a few days. thanks mike(mj motorsports)

Thanks for posting up, Mike. I was afraid there would be a small clearancing issues with the larger rear brakes on the '05 and '06 G35 Coupe.

I would love to find a nice set of 16" x 8" wide wheels but Weld doesn't seem to make them.

I'm looking forward to seeing how you solve this. Waiting for more info and pictures.

Man how come I always find myself in these crazy situations?? Oh well. I was able to make one wheel work but it did take some time. I basically took a 24mm aluminum spacer and bolted it to the back side of the rim(w countersunk allen head bolts). I then lathed off 24 mm of the seat surface of my weld racing lug nuts. Its hard to judge the depth with the wheel not compressing the center floating hub of the rim. But I basically took of the amount equal the spacer width. This is time consuming but vs the extended studs route it is well worth it. You would not be able to put stock/aftermarket wheels back on with longer studs. All I have left is to bolt the spacer to the other rim. Mike infinitiGTR2004 is coming by to see if this stuff looks safe 2morrow so hopefully we get them complete. Will keep you posted. later mike

I think I would have just gotten a set of longer wheel studs.

I remember seeing a thread about longer wheel studs. I can't remember if it was here or on my350z.

One of the guys down here looked into longer studs and it seemed like a difficult install. I know that common arp wheel studs are like 1.5 inches longer than stock. Does anyone know the lenght of the extended ones?

Hahaha... Most people would think turning the lug nuts down in a lathe would be the hard part...

Mike I just installed longer studs on my car last week, took me about 1hr. You can then just run open ended lug nut and spacers or no spacers. It took me some time to figure out the e-brake adjustment, but it was all in the service manual.

Jb, the studs that I installed were 10mm over stock. I ordered them from Coz @ concept z. He had the best prices. They were Ichiba studs I think they are 12 x 1.25 x ? 10mm over stock. If I have the stock ones laying around I could measure them.

Mike throw the new studs in a zip lock and leave them in the freezer over night, it will cause the studs to shrink ever so slightly, also get a fat stack of washers and then impact them on until the shank seats.

Honestly the hardest part was getting my rear rotors off as the rust builds up on the mating surface almost gluing them on. Then adjusting the e-brake a close second.

Well thanks danny for ruining the party!!!!nah just kidding I was able to finish it tonight. However this is crazy. The lug nuts dont have a true center. This was crazy. I started out cutting the bottoms of the lugnuts and they wer coming out wierd.

I then realized that the lugnuts were out of round. noticable by the lugnut on the right.

Wow, that's an amazing...

You created a wheel with more offset and then cut the lug nuts so they would grab the same amount of stud. Very creative. Good job!

Do you have a picture of where the caliper actually rubbed on the wheel?

its actually kinda hard to see. They rubbed before I had them powder coated. doesnt really show in the picture but here they are

We did a test fitting on Mike's car last night and took it out for some shake down runs. The wheels sit perfectly and even the drivability on the street is good. Mike did a good job with the lug nuts and spacer. I can't wait to run them on my car.
