G35 vs. Mustang GT
G35 vs. Mustang GT
yea, i know....we've all been over it but no one has hard numbers....well, my friends dad has a 01 gt auto and he thinks its the fastest damn thing on the face of the earth...i've been on a couple rides with him and i know theres no way in hell my g35 would lose to that car...he might MIGHT have a bit of a jump off the line but after that the g would smoke him...i have an 05 sedan auto...now im looking at the following numbers...
sept 05 motor trend 05 g35 sedan 5A 14.7 95.9
spet 02 car and driver 01 mustang gt 4A 15.1 93 Link
I've been looking hard for months to find some solid numbers on the mustang especially an auto and those are the first solid ones i've come across...maybe its because no one likes writing about a "muscle car" that runs 14's and 15's....every mustang owner thinks their car is amazing (dont get me wrong the new ones are
)...I wanna do my part to shut at least one of em up...I think I have him by at least 2 but maybe as many as 4 or 5 car lengths (at least thats the way the math works out)...also, you cant compare an auto g35 and a manual mustang and vice versa...its apples and oranges...i still pick the 05 g to win vs. 04 and older stang gt if they were both stick and stock... let me know what you guys think...

The 4sp AOD-E tranny in the older mustangs REALLY killed the performance of the engine. The gearing of the tranny and the rear end ratio was too tall. An unmodded 99-03 GT auto would definitely lose to a 5at G35.
But mod the GT just a bit and it might suprise you. If he added headers and cat back (which costs less than just an exhaust upgrade for us) and put in some 3.73 gears, he just might be able to hang.
I do have to say, I had an 87 GT and I had boats load of fun with it.

yea i guess mustangs werent made for an auto tranny...i dont know that much about em...i bet that 87 gt (5.0 right?) was a fun car...did you modd it at all.....
ohh and another thing which ive always wondered....does anyone know how the car mags (r&t, c&d, mt etc.) do their performance tests (specifically 0-60 and 1/4 e.t.)....for example do they do any kind of neutral drop in a stick or power brake in an auto...or how do they do it??????????....

Yeah. My 87 was modded but only slightly. Headers, drilled out cats, and cat back exhaust. That was about it. I just remembered it was an auto and I could hit 60 in 1st gear. That's how I know the gearing is too tall.
A lot of the general magazines like Car and Driver, Motortrend, etc do nothing special for 0-60 accel and 1/4mi test. That's why they generally show slower times than what enthusiasts can get. Other magazines who specialize in certain cars, like Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords, for mustangs and other ford vehicles will 99% of the time get better stats than other magazines b/c of their sheer knowledge of the vehicle.
Oh, and welcome to G35Driver.

Thank you! This forum is great!
After seeing all the guys in this forum that run 14.2 and 14.3 with their 5A's it makes sense, what you said....I've never seen a time lower than 14.6 in a mag for an auto g35...even so the times must be somewhat proportional, right...i still should beat that mustang by .4 or so??? man, i cant wait to race that guy....has anyone ever raced an auto stang gt????????

Don't be surprised if you lose. Should be a very good race. How many miles on your 05 Sedan? Mine is about to hit 9K and it's finally starting to really come alive. My friend had a 100% bone stock 02 Mustang GT auto, he ran a 14.2 at 98mph with a 2.1 60 foot time on stock tires. The tranny that comes in the 99+ GT's is also not the AODE, it's the 4R70W and despite the wide gearing it is still an excellent 4 speed automatic. Fully built they can handle up to 1000hp. BTW, if you lose from a stop ask to go from a 1st gear roll and see how that works out.
I've got almost 4k on my car...So have you really noticed a difference in power after the first 9k??? Ive heard of people saying that but I just figured it was a mental thing or somethin...
14.2...sounds like your friend knows how to drive his car...i've never taken any of my cars to the track and i dont know much about drag racing but it sounds like its all about that 60' time...
i think it would definately be a lot easier for me to beat him from a 1st gear roll...the mustang has so much torque, it could get a good jump from the line which could do me in....no matter where were racing though from the line or a roll should be a fun and close race...

A mustang is like a blank canvas on which to paint a masterpiece.
You can go anyway you want with it. With such a huge aftermarket for the mustang, everything is available.
You can make a world-class handling vehicle (no solid axle comments!), a horsepower monster, or something in between. It is all up to you and your bank account!

Yes, there definately is a big difference when the car gets more broken in. On my old 3.5 Altima at 15k miles it felt a lot faster than at 5k or even 10k. It is not a mental thing, these engines take a long time to break in fully. I'm going to try to prove it by taking the car back to the track once it hits 10k. I took it out when it had under 5k miles on it and the best I can do in 100 degree weather on my 05 5A Sedan was 14.71 at 96.5 with a 2.2 60 foot time. I am hoping to get it down to 14.4-14.5 at 97-98mph with more break in time and a Z-tube (which i'm installing today).
At my track here in Kansas City (1100'), the 99-04 Mustang GT autos in stock and mildly modded (3.73-4.10 gears, exhaust, intake, ECU work, DRs) form are hitting 14.0-14.8 depending on mods. The truth is the auto GT starts out woefully undergeared. A simple gear ratio change and the car instantly sheds about .4 and gains 2mph. I wish out 5AT could see the same gain from a gear change, but our gearing is already about as ideal as you can get thanks to that extra cog in the tranny and relatively deep 3.3 rear gear. Don't sleep on any 99+ Mustang. It's way too easy to make them run. One of my friends as an 01 with 4.10s, DRs, X-pipe, and free mods. He's run 13.6@102. Another friend went with a 9 psi Vortech. He's running 12.4@114mph. They both look stock.
DaveB howd you get your 5A to run a 14.4??? Would you attribute that to mods or to your driving...
Maybe I'm looking in the wrong places but I'm looking for tips on how to get better times out of my car (05 5A)....I mean I've never been out to the track its just that I've seen that auto can do better than 14.7 and I wanna know how..Anyone have any tips (or know where to look)....
