I'm a big fan of the gears, BUT... at the end of the track I was hitting about 6k in 4th. I'm sure gears would help, but would I have to shift to fifth?

A quick calculator check indicates you should be crossing the finish line just before redline in 4th.

Stock G35's are geared very well for the 1/4 mile because the tranny ratios are so aggressive, the rear end gear can be kept relatively mild 3.31 for the 5A's.

The added torque multiplication MORE than makes up for the extra shift, IMHO. For example, my stock "X" w/ the 3.5 gears forces a shift into 4th, while running a 14.50. This is equal/faster than the lighter 5at sedan with lesser gearing (which traps 1-2 mph higher than me)

Take away the 250ms delay from the shift, and the car is a 14.2 car.

Add torque through more multiplication (gears) and the extra shift becomes moot.

Your mileage may vary.

Now with video

A buddy of mine threw together his first video with his new digital camera. Viewable on streetfire@: http://videos.streetfire.net/player....8-A30B51CE4B1F

If they are spinning their tires and still trapping higher than a clean launch, the car either isn't getting into the powerband fast enough, or falling out of it after the shift. A numerically higher rear ring/pinion will exacerbate the traction problems in 1st gear (which can be modulated) but the new rear ratio will keep them in the meat of the powerband for the rest of the run.

Hell, you might even pick up a few MPH of top speed, as the overdrive now becomes a usable gear, too.

Didn't your simulation software tell you this?
Cartest and experience tells me differently. On the better runs, Trey's 60 foots were in the high 2.2s/low 2.3s. The stock gearing is not what was hampering him. He simply wasn't getting traction thanks in part to ultra cold air hardening the rubber and probably some evening frost cropping up on the track. Throwing on a set of deeper gears would only compound the traction problem in 1st and would probably make things bad in 2nd. The 6MT already has enough torque multiplication to get a 1.8 60 foot. It would just take some drag radials/street slicks.

As for the 5AT, the gearing is already pretty ideal. The problem is that programmed 1st gear lag. The 150lb lighter 350Z 5ATs don't suffer from the lag, hence the reason they can easily pull 1.9 60 foots on street tires and we're stuck pulling 2.1-2.3 60 foots. In May, I swapped on a set of 225/50R15 BFG DRs (24") tall. The tire height basically gave my 5AT a 3.5 gear. My 60 foots were fractionally better (.05 seconds, most likely due to the torque multiplication), but I was forced to shift to 4th 150' south of the finish line instead of holding 3rd. The end result was fractionally slower ETs (.05+ seconds) and 1.5-2mph slower MPHs. What this car really needs is the 1st gear lag removed.

Well, if I didn't give a damn about the rear-end hanging together, I could always go with the 3.92 evo's in addition to the slicks. Mid to high 13's, NA, as at least one other 6MT 05 Sedan can attest to.

26" MH ET streets, 5000rpm launch with prayer for the halfshafts, low 1.8 60 foot, 13.4@101mph+. Easy.

That's nice to know, but you forget, the 05 6MT's seem to have a problem launching at anything above 3.5k. You know, the whole stuck-clutch issue. It doesn't seem to be affected by the state of the VDC switch either.

Oh, I've got a pretty cool and short little video of one of my runs versus the SRT4 where I mis-shifted. Cheryl filmed. It's in mp4 format, so you need an mp4 codec or Apple Quicktime. It's only about 1.5mb. Who wants to host it?

And a warning, at the end, I emit a word some might find offensive.

Oh you don't get the full effect without seeing the shorter one with my colorful comment about his shifting and his "exclamation" at the end.
