NOISEY! NISMO Flywheel,Pres.Plate,Clutch.HELP!
Hi Guys,
Just got my 2003 (6300 miles) G35c6mt. back yesterday after a New Transmission was installed by Infiniti. The 3rd gear syn.went out.
Anyway, I had them install the New NISMO R-Spec:
FLYWHEEL #12310-RSZ30-US
PRESSURE PLATE(Cluth Cover) #30210-RSZ30-US
CLUTCH DISC # 30100-RS252-US
When they put the New Trans. in. Of course the NISMO-R
products are not warranted by Nissan at all, but thinking these are matched componants made by NISSAN for the 350Z/G35, I figured it would be Safe & Proven way to go. Boy was I WRONG!
I'm getting a Loud Buzzing sound from underneath the car from 1,500-2,500 RPMS especially when cruising at say 50 MPH in 5th gear w/ the engine lugging during acceleration. It's not the Trans., it shifts Great.
This ia a Very Loud metalic sounding Buzz. I've talked to one Performance shop that speacializes in Z & G cars and he thinks it's a Harmonic Resonance from the Solid Nismo Flywheel & Springless Nismo Clutch, as opossed to the Stock Dual mass Flywheel & Stock Spring Clutch. He has seen this happed w/ lightened Flywheels before. His theory is that the new NISMO Clutch & Flywheel aren't absorbing the engine harmonics Like the Stock setup does in that RPM range. He thinks putting a Springed Clutch Disc back in w/ the Nismo flywheel would help absorb that resonance & hopfully solve the problem.
I wander if NISMO is aware of this Problem, maybe that's why these(R-Spec) pieces aren't recommended for the street.
I've had Performance cars all my life w/many Mods, and I haven't had this come up before.
HELP, your thoughts & Input are appreciated!
Thanks,
RugRatCoupe

Re: NOISEY! NISMO Flywheel,Pres.Plate,Clutch.HELP!
It's not really a problem. See, our stock flywheel weighs so much more because it consists of a lot of sound-dampening materials. All this extra weight on the stock flywheel cancels out all the weird noises and vibrations the transmission WOULD produce, if it was much lighter. Many car manufacturers do this and they do it because if people hear transmissino noises like you are, they would think something is wrong with the car (plus it interferes with the whole "luxury" aspect of the car). Basically, those noises are normal, but you can try to get rid of them with various techniques. My information on this topic is based off of Sport Compact Car's 350Z modified car...one mod they did was the Jim Wolf Flywheel and they got the same sounds you are getting.

I have the same set up just installed last week. I have to agree that you might have a buzzing noise when you try to accelerate and you are in a higher gear then necessary. The fix is to be in a lower gear, and then shift up. You do not want to drive at 50 mph in the 5th gear. I usually stay in the 2nd-3rd under 60 and 3rd-4th after 60mph,depending on how hard you want to accelerate. The performance for this combo is truly outstanding compared with the stock. I think if you will change your driving style a little bit, you will be extremely happy versus paying more for a potential fix.

So you install performance products, w/out the knowledge of knowing the pros and cons... you should have done your research, all over the 350 boards where they have replaced their flywheels they've gotten mass amounts of new noises..this is to be expected with a new lightened flywheel.
good luck

Why would you leave it in 2nd - 3rd up to 60? So you can keep ur revs high for no reason?

You are definitely hearing the "cement grinder" normal sound.

narkotic,
I did the research. Even P.M.ed "infidsg35" who has a JUN Lightened Flywheel. I Just thought playing it safe with NISMO stuff would be the way to go.But I still have a noisey flywheel.
Aside from some noise between 1,500 & 2,500 rpm, I really CAN tell a differance with this setup.
The NISMO clutch is awesome. It'll engage smoother than the stock Clutch & Pressure Plate was ever able to, or it can Jerk the tears right out of your eyes if you let it out too quickly. The car is so much more responsive now with the NISMO lightened flywheel. The additional quickness of the car makes it Feel like I've gained 15-20 HP.
Don't get me wrong, All in all I'm very Happy with the Performance of the New NISMO Clutch, Pressure Plate & Lightened Flywheel.
Just Dissapointed in the loss of Smoothness & the Extra Noise after going with the (Hopefully More Proven) NISMO Stuff.
Thanks for your Input guys & Take-Care

Loss of smoothness shouldn't be a surprise...You're going to lose some street manners when you start playing with the flywheel and clutch...At least you seem to have a good attitude about it
