Hey everyone. Just joined. I recently purchased an '03 and have had this clattering clutch... Every time I stop after work to check mail, and putting car in neutral, the clattering begins. Sometimes embarassingly loud. I'm not sure, but are $35K sport coupes supposed to rattle like that? I've told dealer and they said it "shouldn't rattle". I've tried twice stopping by after work so they can hear noise, and of course it doesn't make it.

Different note: everytime I put windows down, there's this clicking noise. Like the regulator thinks it's still putting window down. Dealer says it's normal...

Any suggestions? Thanks -

I've had and still have this chatter issue. It doesn't seem to be as bad now though.

I took the car in when it had around 4K miles to service the issue. The dealer could not determine the problem, so they replaced the clutch, flywheel, AND transmission. This replacement did not solve the problem, but again I don't really get BAD chatter that often. All in all, I'm glad they replaced everything for me. It may not have solved the problem, but it was good customer service!

It just doesn't seem right for the clutch to chatter as much as others have experienced.

I would understand if I was driving around in a race car, but not a race car with leather seats!

Yeah, I have the same problem. It feels to me like there is an obstruction in the shift gate and the shifter hits something, then when you get it in gear you hear the "clank", mainly in 2nd and sometimes in 3rd.

This sounds very odd. The sedan and coupe and 350Z have the same trannys and mine has never done that...ever.

I have an 03 and after I took it in with 11K miles because the chatter was unbearable, they replaced the clutch because the "pressure plate shattered" according to my dealer. So should there be some noise?......YES ....Should there be alot of noise???? No! I actually may take mine back again becuase it recently got extremely loud. When it was new and when it was replaced, it was only audible if I **** the radio off and stood outside the car. Now it's audible inside and outside the car even with radio on at a fairly decent volume! My advice to you if its really loud is to take it in before 12K miles so you won't have warranty issues!

I think it sounds great. Reminiscent of race-prepped cars w/ aggressive clutches... the noise either comes from the dual-mass flywheel, or the transmission itself. The transmission is a very over-engineered piece; so much in fact that the 6MT cars weight MORE than the 5AT cars! My G rattled a lot--sounded great. My new Z 35th does the same. I love it!

Re: Clutch Chatter

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Mine is the same way. After highway driving and coming to a stop in neutral it sounds like the tranny is going to fly apart with the rattling. Most times it is still noisey but not that bad. I have driven sticks for over 10 years now and this by far is the NOISIEST! Doens't seem right.
2nd gear is always a joy to shift into also. It almost grinds but just barely barely. Just not smooth at all like the rest of the gears.

Hey I am also having the same problems. I took mine in last Thursday and they told me the transmission had to be replaced. Thank god for warranty. Anyways, hopefully that solves the chatter noises and I cant wait to get my coupe back! I believe there was one person on this thread that posted, that they too had similar issues with the chatter noises from the engine bay. You stated that the flywheel, clutch and transmission was replaced. Why are you still hearing the same chatter noises then? You would think after all those defected parts were replaced, the chatter noise would no longer exist. Hypothetically speaking, what if the dealer had you believing all those parts were replaced, but really nothing was touched and that’s why the same chatter noises are still being heard. Now that scenario would definitely suck!

I've got an '05, and I've also got that problem with shifting into 2nd. Only had it happen a few times shifting into third. When shifting from 1st to second, it feels like there's a little obstruction if I pull a little to the left. Seems to be better if I got straight down.

I think you are asking me...yes, they replaced the tranny, flywheel, and clutch assembly becase they could not identify the issue. They did this based on instructions from Nissan Techs in CA?

I took the G out for a good drive this weekend because of the beautiful weather, AND the chatter came back for a brief period. Also during heavy exceleration, it sounded like the heat shield was loose? (Although, this only happed once)

I feared that the warmer weather will "loosen thing up" and the rattles would come back... and this seems to be happening again...

I will take the car back in during the summer if the chatter is "unbearable". Now it's just on-and-off chattering.

I still love the car tho......enjoy!

Edit: I don't know why I still am hearing occasional chatter?? my guess would be the way the clutch is designed. It doesn't seem to affect performance, but it does sound "cheap".
