That happened to me once also, and I'm close to 25K now. I'm a conservative driver, but I was in a situation where I needed to get out of the way of another car quickly. I did, but the clutch stuck and fried as well. Had to play with the pedal for a while before it would even pop back up. There's definitely a design issue since even a slipping clutch from over reving or over powering due to turbo etc. should allow the pedal to come back to the rest position.
