Question - 3.3 Open Diff to 3.7 VLSD

Here's the deal... I have 04 AT base sedan = 3.3 FD w/ open differential.

I am getting 3.7 FD gears - a while back I asked if it is worth it to do gears with open diff - the consensus was no and I agree.

So... I sourced an OEM VLSD from an 06 350 Z and will be purchasing 3.7 FD new. The trick is getting it all in my existing pumpkin. The VLSD is differential only, not entire pumpkin.

I called several shops to get quotes and timeframe and as expected most said several days to a week. I figured that’s logical since this is basically rebuilding the existing - not swapping pumpkins. BUT... Kaaz said they could do it in 4 hours!

Is it possible to install stock VLSD and 3.7 gears in an open diff pumpkin in 4 hours?...

I guess if they know what they are doing they can get it done.

Did you get axle stubbs with the vLSD?
Make sure they know they are putting a vLSD into a 3.3 pumpkin because I thought the internal housing was slightly different.

I went from 3.3 to 3.7 and it was a great change. 3.3 is tall as hell with tires that are 30.4" tall oem.

it's jut the vLSD, nothing else... I'm getting a quote from Perf Nissan for the axle stubs, shims, etc... He knows it's going in 3.3 pumpkin...

I'm anxious to get the gears - the open diff is just getting in the way of the whole project. So I have to incorporate LSD too.

Kaaz makes LSDs so I know they know what they are doing - Just 4 hours seems unrealistic. I'm no expert though... maybe someone that is can chime in - please...

I just noticed your sig says TT'd FX... I thought FX had 3.7 OEM. And for FI taller gears are better?...

Thats not unrealistic at all. For a shop with power tools it wouldnt take long at all to change out the r&p and swap out the guts.

The whole trick is setting up the gear lash properly. So the shim portion is what takes time. 4 hours seems OK for removal and re-install, but not the tear down and re-set...you can't just use the old sums that were there, and you have no idea what sized shims you'll even need, until they are taken apart and measured/mic'd.

There are about 22 sizes of shims to go through, so you can't just guess and order some.
