3.917 rear ?

I read here that there is a 3.917 rear available to replace the stock 3.5. Have not seen any more info on it.

Where can I get it and does it fit the coupe?
Works for the Auto trans?
Shouldn't this put at least 10% more torque to the ground? Price?

Mike - Try www.350EVO.com
I've been talking with BJ from EVO & the tooling for the gears has just entered mass production. They're giving a 3/04 availability date. I also have an A/T in my coupe & BJ tells me that the gears will work. However, if U want a "plug & play" setup with an LSD, then it'll obviously cost more ( maybe $1500 ). I'll probably go that route because I want to save my factory "pumpkin" with the longer gears ( I think the A/T has 3.23's ? ) in case my eventual F/I setup blows the tires away from a standing stop. Just give BJ a call or an e-mail. He's REALLY good about returning contacts!

Re: 3.917 rear ?

Just what Iw as gonna say. Gene, don't you think that it is a bit much? The revs are gonna be a lot higher on the freeway going a set speed. I just don't wanna be going 80 and have the same rev as I would have had on the 4th gear @ that speed.

The stock FDR on MT's is 3.5xx - I have that now - was somewhat of an improvement. SO a 3.917 FDR would be a whopping 14.x% change - Iw ish I could do this and get away with it!!! The AT's have a 3.5xx FDR - so a change from this is about 10% - not as bad.

Gurgen,

I agree with your opinion that 3.917:1 rear end gears would significantly impact our cars' highway crusing ability and mileage. Speaking of that, have you checked your highway mileage since installing the MT gears?

For clarity, the MT gears are near 3.54:1 and the AT gears are near 3.36:1.

I'm curious. What does FDR stand for? I'm not familiar with the term.

Re: 3.917 rear ?

Yes it's final drive ratio and i heard a mechanic refer to it some time back. Also, the MPG, subjectively, seems ot be about the same. Although I have yet ot make objective measurements.

Oh man, I don't spend any time in a gear as it is, definately not something I'd do. 6mt is plenty close ratio enough for me

Dang straight, it's all about the glory of helping. Who have you helped today?

Re: 3.917 rear ?

Gurgen - U & BJ think alike! The first question he asked me was "how much highway driving do ya do?" I made a similar gearing change on my GS400 ( 3.23's to 3.76's ) & I lost a little over 1 highway mpg BUT my quartermile times dropped almost .3 seconds!! I simply replaced miles per gallon with "smiles per gallon!!" Heck, I didn't buy & mod this car for mileage!! Wait a minute!! Mileage concerns from a man planning a serious FORCED INDUCTION systen??? What's up there!!! Hope things R going well on that front, Gurgen.

Re: 3.917 rear ?

Thanks guys.

It turns out I am familiar with the term but in a slightly different context. To me the final drive ratio is different than the rear end gear ratio. Isn't the FDR the car transmission's highest gear ratio times the rear end ratio? That's the way I learned it many, many years ago.

Re: 3.917 rear ?

Hey Gene

So you actually felt the increase? I am not sure if it is worth 1200+ with labor that it'll cost to put it in. Maybe with my upcoming turbo, I really shouldn't do it. Speaking of which, it is backordered til February!!! That really sucks, but I will still enjoy my car thoroughly til then - it is a rocket and yet potentially not-perfectly tuned (as it will be tomorrow, or the day after).

Will report back on that in a new thread. Watch out for it.

Gurgen
