New tranny just installed
Hey all,
Well I just got back from the dealer and have my new transmission, clutch, and pressure plate. I actually paid for the new pressure plate (per the tech's recommendation), but the clutch and tranny were covered under my warranty.
The first thing I noticed was how much looser the clutch pedal is and how high up the clutch engages now. I only stalled out once while making a turn at a red light, but I came close to stalling out several times! I feel like I'm driving a totally different car. It will take some time to get used to, but I guess it's no big deal since I have to drive carefully to "break-in" the new tranny anyway. My service advisor recommended not to take it to red-line for 2500 miles. Anyone know if this is a bit too conservative?
At first I was worried that the dealer would not honor the warranty because of all the mods I've done. But the fact that they didn't even bring that up clearly indicates that they are fully aware of the well-known recurring problems with these transmissions. I advise anyone who's concerned about their trannies to push hard to get this issue fixed before your warranties expire.
In any event, here's the section of my repair invoice describing the diagnosis, replacement, and associated part numbers. Good luck.

Yeah, I agree with you. It's really about how you approach them and present your request. It also helps that we drive luxury cars; the dealers do realize we've paid a nice penny to buy their vehicles and are therefore less likely to nickel and dime us for obvious manufacturer defects.

Yeah, I first noticed my issue over a year ago with the "occasional" grind going into 3rd (maybe twice a week), but only at low RPM's. High revving was butter so I didn't mind.
However, the issue eventually progressed such that I could not avoid the grind at all when shifting into 3rd with the RPM's over 5000. The only way to avoid grinding was slow, deliberate shifts at lower RPM's. Talk about a car not being fun to drive anymore...
If I would've had to prove to the dealer that the tranny had issues way back when the issue first appeared, I would not have gotten the replacement since the grinding was so sporadic and hard to duplicate at will.

Everything was covered under the powertrain warranty, except for the pressure plate. I paid for that one part and they threw it in with no labor charge since the tranny was already disassembled and they were putting in a new clutch anyway.
I'm going to see what they say about my oil burning issue next (about a quart every two weeks/750 miles).

ive had them replace my trans twice now...each time they did it without hesitation, im telling you it helps to have your tech on your side...its not the service writer that approves the work. people always try to get as much free crap without giving back to those who help you...a box of donuts goes a far way...
