Shift **** removal possible damage

Here on the forum I've read about how you are supposed to remove a shift **** to minimize the risk of damaging certain tranny parts. I did follow the under the boot vice and twist the **** procedure, but at times I would have the vice slip off. I wanted to know how you could tell if any damage was done in the **** removal process if my vice grip slipped a few times. What part is this that gets damaged? Car seems to be driving ok, but there are some vibrations I didn't notice before I changed the ****.

Thanks.

If you damage anything, you'd damage the leather on the shift **** itself.

The vibration is most likely from the little metal ring towards the top of the shifter. I wrapped it with electric tape so there isn't metal touching metal, and to give it less space to move around, then I taped it down.

That was also what I was wondering right after i made my post. Has anyone actually had any documented damage to their cars after "improperly" removing a shift ****? I'm sure if someone did there would have been a frantic post about it. Anyone out there break something when removing a shift ****? If anyone was to break something while DIY, its gonna be me...and everything seems ok.

Vibration isn't coming from the ****, I have the project Mu **** installed so i'm not using the metal ring. sounds like its somewhere under the radio. I'm sure its nothing my car makes lots of noises.

Isn't the OEM thred locker fun.........?

I'll take it for granted you're not refering to the 5 AT shift ****. With the stick
shift you need to use vice-grips top and bottom. The thred locker the factory
uses is damn good stuff so you might have a buddy hold the bottom while you
swing on the top........don't give up, it will loosen.....vice-grips are the key!

i had to get someone else to hold the bottom part with chanel locks and counter torque while I did the top part. It was pretty tuff to remove. i doubt you damaged anything if it just slipped. if you kept turning then you might have.

Ok, you guys are making me worried. I've removed my shift **** just by grabbing it by hand and turning it counter clockwise until it came off. How could you damage your tranny by taking a **** off?

I just bought one yesterday. I havent gotten it yet but I plan on doing so as soon as I recieve it. I didnt realize how much effort it takes just to remove it. Wouldnt a torque wrech tear or scrape the shift lever? And what rings do you guys speak of??

You don't need a torque wrench, I was just speaking as to how you needed to counter the force of twisting off the shift **** and having someone else hold the bottom part still while you turn the top really helps. Check out the tutorial on 350Ztech.
