Refused to shift into 5th?
Refused to shift into 5th?
2003 5at - it was fairly cold today (below -30deg. F) and until the engine warmed up I couldn't get into 5th at any speed, be it in manual or automatic mode. Once it warmed up i didn't have any problems, and it didn't resurface.....any idea if this was just a fluke, or indicative of some problem starting?
Most AT transmissions won't shift into the highest/overdrive gear when the engine hasn't been at least partially warmed up yet. I believe it has something to do with the emissions so that the engine warms up to operating temperatures as quickly as possible. Can't say for my G because its a 6mt, but for my family's Camry, it definitely does that where it will not engage the last gear for a few minutes after starting.

Screw -54*F... hell, I'm in Texas... middle finger to +54*F...
I'd say not really a problem either... even if the engine is warm, it doesn't mean the tranny is... the fluid was probably just stiff, cold, slushy... I probably don't have to say anything about how you should def keep your fluids fresh in that thing in that weather!
