Unhappy 5th gear problems....

Lately when I downshift from 6th gear to 5th, I get this horrible grind sound and it feels like I threw my shifter into a wood chipper instead of a shift gate. This usually happens when I need a little more power or when I'm lugging in 6th so I need to downshift only one gear. I rev match a tiny bit but there really isn't much rev-matching to be done from 6th to 5th at low RPM (and before anyone asks, the clutch is fully ON the floor). I am thinking the problem may be the gear synchros... but my car only has 27k miles and that's way too young to be having transmission problems.

The only way I have been able to solve this problem is double clutching (shift to neutral, clutch out, rev match, clutch in, shift to 5th, clutch out) but with modern transmissions that should never be neccesary. Anyone have similar experiences or could diagnose this problem?

Thanks for the help.

I had the problem, took it to the dealer, explained it just like you did, and they replaced the tranny...for bad syncros. took a day and a half, and i got a loaner. Its a small but common problem for the 05s...

after it was done, the entire transmission shifts better than my original tranny ever did!

Good luck with it

Yeah, actually it has been a problem since the '03 models. Even the 350Z's had the problem. If you take it to the dealer and have them take it for a test run, they'll be able to identify the problem and more than likely replace the tranny. I took my '03 in with I think about 32,000 miles on it and they replaced the tranny, no questions asked. This was even with a pully kit and a JWT flywheel installed. I had the same problem, 6th to 5th and even 4th to 5th. So if you wait the problem will just get worse.

Good luck,

Ray

Same here. Took my 04 to the dealer when it had 57,000 miles on it. They replaced the entire trans under warranty. Got a loaner for a couple days while they waited for the trans to come in. No big deal, nothing to be concerned about.

You can easily reproduce the problem by quickly shifting into 5th gear from any gear with the clutch all the way to the floor.
