How do you tell when your clutch is almost gone?

How do you tell when your clutch is almost gone?

Hi Guys,

I've recently (about 1 month ago) bought a 2004 Infiniti G35 Coupe 6MT and this is my first manual car ever. I've recently noticed that my clutch feels a little funny and want to know what's a way I can sorta guesstimate how much I've got left on my clutch.

Usually the clutch pushes down real smooth but tonight I've noticed that when I push the clutch all the way down (regardless if the engine is on or off) I hear a little noise. The feeling is like those springs on a mattress when you almost compress or push the spring all the way down. This feeling & noise also applies whenever I'm driving and shifting gears.

The other thing I've noticed yesterday that I haven't have not felt before is that whenever I am in neutral (with the engine on) and I just push down on the clutch and hold it just at the sweet spot, there's this feeling like the clutch is lightly grinding against some sort of spinning gears or something? I also started to notice this same feeling when I'm shift gears. I'm wondering if this is normal?

Another question I have is that what's the worse that could happen if my clutch dies? Does that mean my car will not run and I would have to get somebody to tow my car into the repair shop and get it fixed? And is it possible for the clutch to just die on me half way when I'm driving which means I suddenly can't shift gears or anything at all?

Before I purchased the car I brought the car into an Infiniti dealership for a pre-owned vehicle inspection and the report came out saying that the clutch was "fair". I am starting to doubt more and more about the reliability of their report because they said my power locks were all fine...etc on the report but as soon as I purchased the car (which was 3 days after the inspection) I noticed the passenger side power lock was dead and had to pay to get that fixed. And now this sort of thing is happening. My gut feeling is telling me that my clutch is starting to die but there's no way for me to tell except to bring it into an Infiniti Dealership and they want to charge me a $120 one-time diagnostic fee because I no longer have warranty anymore.

What would you guys recommend? Any suggestions??? Thanks in advance!

I just had my clutch go out on me 60k on an 03 coupe....all that happened was two days prior the rpms started revving up before the car would go....then it just went out.

this could be a throwout or pilot bearing issue too....there is two bolts on the left side of the tranny if your looking towards the front. there is a cover there that you may be able to see inside and get a look at your clutch and how much of the disc you still have

other possibility is i had what felt like fifth and six gear go out....they didtn really go out a bolt was coming loose on the top of the shifter and it made it feel like i had no gears...that could be the rattling and reason its grinding
