6MT vs 5AT
... I know what you're thinking but this is actually NOT one of THOSE threads
To get the most performanace out of either vehicle off the line you have to either slip the clutch (6MT) or Brake-Torque(5AT) Just wondering which is worst as regards wear and tear on a drive trane... any opinions?

Re: 6MT vs 5AT
Both methods do NOT damage the transmission itself, per se. The slipping takes place upstream (just before) of the tranny. In the case of a MT, the clutch/pressure plate sit right before the tranny, while the tranny is just sitting there in first gear. In the case of an AT, it is the torque converter that is experiencing slippage, the tranny is in 1st gear; of course, while brake torqueing, the AT fluid heats up tremendously and very quickly, which does pass on the heat to the tranny (not very good). The danger is doing it too much and consecutevly (AT)...
What's of course really bad, is free-revving and slamming the AT into first gear; there you are imparting major damage to the tranny by way of shocking the gears with great amounts of torque...

Re: 6MT vs 5AT
I own a 5At and brake toruqing for launch is not great for your transmission. I often find the car responds better to 3/4 throttle from a complete stop and builds very nicely therafter. As regards slipping the clutch in a manual, the VDC will kick in when it detects tire spin, thus slowing the car down too get better control. In a manual trans, turn off VDC, but watch out for tire spin and as always with VDC off, you'd better get some practice in first.
Hope this helps.
