G35 5AT Lag in Manumatic UP Shifting

Does anyone know why there seems to be a slight lag in the G35's shifting while in M mode? When I use the manumatic mode in our 2003 Infiniti FX35, it responds very quickly as I shift (almost immediate change of gears as I shift up or down). However, in my 2004.5 G35, there is about a 1/2-1 sec. delay from the time I shift UP manually...it's a bit annoying. I haven't noticed this delay when downshifting (say from 4th to 3rd).

Anyone know what the deal is with this and if my dealer can correct it (with an ecu reset or transmission adjustment perhaps)? Thank you.

Get GordGee's grounding wires, including the number 9 and 10 (ECU and TCU wires). I believe you will notice a difference in shifting firmness and quickens and better general response.

Re: G35 5AT Lag in Manumatic UP Shifting

Just a quick observation about the wiring. I just added a 5 wiring kit and I noticed that the vehicle shifts in the red and does not hit the rev limiter. The vehicle seems to shift hard too. Sometimes the slip light comes on, at WOT, when the vehicle shifts from 1st to 2nd.
I am not complaining but its an observation I made.

I have a 2003.5 sedan auto.
other mods: z tube, pop charger. after market muffler.

I have noticed this same problem on my sedan in MM mode. How does the grounding wires affect the [censored] firmness? Getting the AT to shift firmley would be a huge improvement.

This was just an observation and I was hoping that someone could explain this to me. Could this be the ground kit I installed or if it is how I drive on an daily basis and the transmission is just adjusting.

Sorry I couldn't help.

I second Gurgun's recommendation.

GordGee's 10-wire Ground Gear system worked out well on my 2003 AT Sedan. IMO, it's a great modification... and I started out a unbeliever.

From a very good source... the G35 AT Sedan's TCM program calls for a 0.4 second "luxury" shift. While in initial testing, the TCM and ECM actually corrected the modified valve body's shift characteristics back to stock parameters.

Re: G35 5AT Lag in Manumatic UP Shifting

I'm bringing my car in for service on Monday. With 950mi. now on the car, it seems like the upshifting delay isn't quite as bad as it was, but it's still noticeable. My Infiniti service manager told me over the phone that the car's computer is still "in learning mode" and adjusting to my driving/shifting habits...is this correct or a bunch of b.s.?

Can Infiniti do a TCU update or reset to resolve the upshifting delay? Or, do you think they would add ground wires to the ECU and TCU?

What could I ask them to do to eliminate this delay? I feel like there's something wrong with the transmission and this shifting delay should be corrected by Infiniti under my warranty. Anyone know? Thanks.

Re: G35 5AT Lag in Manumatic UP Shifting

I find that the time delay varies. It seems to hold longer the harder you accelerate & at higher revs.
I find I have to shift about 500 revs early, to hit the shift points I want.
Also I find I still have a brain cramp from my manual trany days.
I find myself wanting to ease up on the gas when it shifts.
I really miss the manual trany, but my left knee is to screwed up to evan conside driving in daily traffic...

Did you get your tranny update to the 04 trany mapping? I had mine changed and it made a significant improvement. Did you notice anything more from the ground wires other than shifting? Couldn't I just add one from the battery to the TCM?

gspot35,

Which TCM software upgrade did you get? Could you provide the part number and build date of your G?

I believe my 2003 AT Sedan was the one of the first to get the TCM's AL004 program update. This was the latest program that was guaranteed to work in my beta tester car (as Gurgen puts it). Since then Gurgen has had his done.

My hat's off to Justin at EverythingG35 and Infiniti of Scottsdale for doing this mod. They're great mod friendly people.

Don't really know how well one TCM ground wire would work. In my subjective opinion, Gord Gee's 10-wire Ground Gear System works very well. I understand and appreciate the amount of R&D as well as the quality he puts into his systems.

Sorry, I still ahven't decide whether or not to do a GroundingGear™ website yet, since my distribution is normally through authorized dealers and a distributor. Just PM me.

I just got a Stillen Grounding Kit today and installed it. It works wonderfully. I really do recommend purchasing a grounding kit. My MM mode shifts quicker and I feel a quicker throttle response.
