Rattling noise in neutral?

I have a 6m '04 Coupe, and when my car's in complete neutral, meaning out of gear and clutch disengaged, you can here a rattling noise. It sounds like its coming from mid area of my car, I can't be specific and say transmission, but its there. When I engage the clutch the sound goes away, and when Its in gear its gone too. Just wondering what this noise could be.

I know some folks had a rattling sound coming from the rear differentials or something of the sort, but this doesn't sound like thats the problem.

Any info is appreciated

Thanks In advance,
-BM

Re: Rattling noise in neutral?

I believe it's called your Main throw out bearing and it's supposed to be normal, according to the dealer. I have the same setup and the same problem.

2 G or NOT 2 G, there is no question!

Normal according to Nissan/Infiniti - there is a huge thread about this on my350z.com under the "Repairing" section.

Could be a heatshield. When your engine is not under load, it could cause some rattling. Just a thought.

Re: Rattling noise in neutral?

It is actually the dual mass flywheel, two masses that have a small amount of rotation in them, the rattling is the sound of them knocking together (got this from my friendly Infiniti tech)

That's why I'm going for the Nismo clutch and flywheel, and just remember, for every 1lb you lose off the crank you gain 2.7hp, drop 15lbs, gain 30hp :-)

Re: Rattling noise in neutral?

Hey guys I read this thread and the one in "Repairing" on my350z.com.

Is this something the dealer needs to replace? Has anyone had any luck getting the dealer to fix the problem?

I have trouble believing that a rattling, clacking sound that starts at 20K miles (in my case) is "normal" for a car I paid 36K for. Hell, my parents' 93 Toyota Corrolla doesn't make this much noise, and it's like driving a freakin go-cart.
