Drivetrain Questions and info regarding transmissions, clutches, etc.

5AT 3rd gear/top end is just sadly horrendous.

I'm glad someone actually knows what's wrong with the automatic tranny. I agree with the OP 3rd gear with stock FD is weak.

Mike, your car was the same way before the FD and after u gained over a car launch with you modded 5AT against my back then exhaust, Z-tubed 6MT, u could clearly see me creeping up to you and u ended up winning the raced by 0.1 of a second.

I have had a very hard time prooving this point to Dave and other 5AT owners for some reason and im glad someone who actually drives one posts about it.

Racing a 5AT 60 and up was a very accurate way to tell a difference between 6MT and 5AT. They seemed like different cars.

Hence the reason 335 having tall a$$ gears eventhough its 6AT. Theoretically top speed of the 335 is 200mph but it tops out in beginning of 5th gear (152mph). Don't ask me how i know.

My best ever run stock was a 14.6 in 40 degree weather in AZ.. Stock in 110+ weather my best was a 15.1

My best fully modded was a 14.3 in 115+ degrees.. I never ran it in 40 degree weather.. I'm sure I could have hit 13.9 with my mods in cold weather.

Wow thank you!

I would have never came to this conculsion if I wasn't honest and without my experience of racing 30+ different G's and Z's.. The MT just PULLS compared to the 5AT at 60 mph. It really is like a whole different car.

what gear are you talking about with the MT at 60mph? What is the auto 3rd gear ratio via whatever gear the MT is in at the time? 2nd? 3rd? 4th?

3rd gear on 6MT redlines at ~80mph and 4rth redlines little over 100-105mph. when in 3rd gear on 6MT @ 60mph you are making much more power because you are at higher RPM compared to 5AT at the same speed.

MTs have shorter gears, not longer.

What he said.

60 mph is the beginning of 3rd but u can't get into 2nd at 60 so you're sitting at a very low rpm.. MT's sit at a higher RPM and get that strong better jump which carries over into 4th and 5th...

You may want to try the 3.5 MT6 rear end . I had one in my AT5 for a while . It made a big diffence but I was around 400whp at the time and I didnt like 1st and 2nd with it . The 3.7 reaar is equal to the 3.9 for MT6 trannies if you want to go bigger

just have to put in my .02 here... I raced my car in 50 degree weather one night and my best run was 14.3 (stock 2006 5AT) and i ran consistent 14.5's in 90 degree weather.

just something for you to compare to.....

Yeah but it all depends on elevation and where you live... Put me 200 feet under ocean waters and I'll run 12's

if you are running ~14.3 you are probably on par if not beating most 6mt drivers. the best drivers stock are maybe able to take it .2-.3 secs lower than that. But I don't recall seeing many, if any, stock 6mts running under 14.0. So really your car isn't much slower, it just has a crappier start to 3rd, but at least you can think your car is faster before that
