5AT 3rd gear/top end is just sadly horrendous.

For pretty much 2 years of messing around with triptronic and about 60K miles of experimenting with this tranny i've just finally have come to the conclusion that the 5AT weakest point is 3rd gear and there is just nothing you can do about it other than changing the rear end.

1st and 2nd are monsters on my car but once 3rd gear comes (stock) its just this huge slouch. What can cure this disease?

From racing multiple 6MT Z/G's and revup/non revups my 5AT is always neck and neck with the 6MT or pulling, but once 3rd hits my 5AT just halts and the other 6MT starts pulling and FLYING away by a lot! It really sucks.

I remember when I did have full NA boltons w/ test pipes my top end was actually pretty impressive, I pulled on a 6MT Z with similar mods as me (he did have more weight though).. This was all in 3rd gear.

Discuss.. I've been thinking about remodding my G all over again but this transmission and that crappy 3rd gear is giving me my doubts.

I did have my 3.9 gears but they were way too short.. without that 6th gear the gas mileage goes bad quickly

My 3rd gear pulls really hard. As soon as it hits 3rd it seems to really take off.

I think 3rd gear feels the best...you can really hear the turbos spool in 3rd.

Well the 6mt has the benefit of being about to spread out the gears over 6 sets of gears vs the auto's 5. But if you demodded, what do you expect? The autos as you know have a taller final drive vs the manuals also. Instead of the 3.9 you could try the 3.7?(I can't remember if that's right)

Not sure why you went modded, demodded and now wonder why you can't keep with the manuals though.

you have a 5/8 spacer? that would prob help.. other than that you could try a more conservative gear ratio...

What was the full list of your previous mods?

Kinetix SSV
AEM CAI
Staight pipe exhaust w/ test pipes and muffler delete
Central 20 3.9 gears
Lightweight pulleys

-No Tune, flash, or any ECU-

I also had lighter wheels and carbon fiber body parts (bumper, hood).

1st and 2nd were complete monsters, 3rd ended too quick (after 3rd I'd start to get walked on by longer geared Z's and G's.

Lets say I do a stock for stock my 5AT vs. a 6MT Z/G 65 MPH roll race.. I would get clobbered BAD! but say we do a 10/20 mph roll I would always get a pull on the 6MT till we hit about 60-70 then my car just dies and they fly by me like a rocket. Especially if its a Rev UP because of the of the increased HP/redline/topend..

06 airbox or stillen, 5/16" or 3/8 spacer, test pipes/high flow cats and maybe a stillen/motordyne XYZ Y. Then a reflash. That would net you 90% of what you had before.

You shop smart and most of not all of that can be had used.

Hell I'm selling my osris/cipher now in the local Z forum.

So do you think its normal for a stock to be that crappy and slow for 3rd gear?

What do you think of swapping a 3.5 diff from a MT or a 3.7 diff from a newer G35 sedan/HR Z?

I have no idea how "crappy" your stock car is/isn't. Hard to tell w/o a 1/4 time or a dyno sheet.
