Diff oil: 75w-90 or 75w-140?
I've been changing my diff fluid myself every 30k miles, and I'm coming up on the 120k mark. However, when I went through my fluid stash, I found that I have 1.5 quarts of Redline 75w-90 left and 2 quarts of 75w-140 left. I must have inadvertently bought the 75w-140 as I've always used 75w-90 in the previous changes. (Mobil 1 synthetic the first two changes, and Redline from now on.) Aside from seeing a general post about "master techs" saying 75w-140 will provide more protection at "warmer temperatures" I haven't really read anything else. Is that diff operating temperature, and does outside air temp play that big a difference? It's winter in Seattle, and I don't exactly drive enough to get the diff really hot (no fun long distance highway drives) so, my question: do I just use the 75w-90 and ebay off the 75w-140, or save it for next time, or just say "screw it!" and use 75w-140 from now on? Thanks for any input, and forgive the ignorance of this old timer. . .I've been spending WAY more time with the kiddo than the carro these days!

80W-90 is the stock fluid. You should go with the 75W-90
I just used Mobile 1 80W-90 recently. Previously i have used Royal Purple. With royal purple up at $18/qt for the gear oil I wasn't gonna use that this time.

Will do. Do you recommend selling off the 75w-140? I still haven't seen any conclusive info on whether it's bad/damaging or not. The only thing I see is that the 140 is heavier and 80w-90 is in the FSM. Does anyone know if this will only have a negative effect at way fringe cases. ..like driving in -50*F in Alaska snow storms? Because I won't be doing that any time soon. . .not a super big deal, since the 75w-90 has "negligable difference" from 80w-90 (per bobistheoilguy and amsoil.com). Anyway, thanks for the input!

Sorry. . .but let me quote myself for those that may have missed it:
So yes, I already have it. . .I thought I was snatching up all the redline 75w-90 but must have picked up the -140 too. . .inadvertently. So I already have it. Do I ditch it? Can I use it? Oy.

^^^ my bad for not reading the entire run-on paragraph just to find the pertinent info.
Buy the 75W-90 and change the fluid and call it a day... ditch the 140 or try to exchange... IMO it wouldn't even be worth trying to "sell" it... actually, it wouldn't even be worth a thread (if it were me).

i think the 140 weight is just too heavy for our car. Its mostly just used in heavy duty trucks.
take it and get your money back or just exchange it for the 75w-90 for the next service interval.

Man. . .thought you were better than that. You weren't so snide at that AMS (or AMwhatever) dyno day a few years back. Don't turn into the riff raff that makes this site worthless, and drives off all the Clint's and Gurgen's. With all the BS that's cluttering the forums these days, it's hard to find good info and experiences, and filter out what answers one isn't looking for. Hence the "specialized" question. It's more specific about my own experience and not a typical "volks or . . ." thread. Whelp. . .off to clean and change oils!
^^^ you;ve got to be kidding right... seriously man, read my first post and read your response. Dont be a douche and I wont be.
if you already have enough diff oil - then why did you bother to create a thread? The way I read it you didnt have enough 75-90 and wanted to know if you could use 140...

Mike means no harm. He's just been on the forum for a long time and sees the same post all too often. He's knowledgeable about lots of things and has done pretty much every NA mod available. Sometimes he just needs to have a little drink before he comes to play

hahaDrew and I have met before... he's a cool guy and I have no problem with him in general... I just don't respond well to derogatory posts directed at me.
If you notice, my jabs on this forum are 99% of the time responses to someone making a snide comment or derogatory post first... I rarely (if ever) make the first neg comment - but I definitely will respond to them.
Guys I know real well, we sometimes riff with each other just giving each other a hard time (but we know each other and realize we are joshing)... when its someone I'm not real close to, I don't know if they are joking or not and I respond in kind.
Anyway - back on topic... I guess Drewer got his answer = try to get $$ for the 140 (but I wouldn't spend a lot of energy on it) and use the 75W-90.
No ill feelings Drewer

Guys guys!
Beer's on me!
But seriously, just to clear it up: I was curious (and assume others would have the same question) what the difference is between the two oils. No need to read into it any more. . .sorry if my ramble was confusing.
And definitely, I know the grey ghost has a very inquisitive owner. Not sure I'm sold on the vortex ring
but I'm still lurking about reading up on things from time to time.
I probably should have been more clear when I quoted Mike and busted out the funny gif. I was just giving him a hard time. I usually only like to give people a hard time if I've met 'em before. . .but. . .as Mike said, it's been a LONG time. So yes. . .
Yes. I was with totally teasing with the Samuel L Jerkson gif. . .hence the big HAHA after and "dont. . .make. . .me. . ." I thought those would be key enough to not take it so seriously. Anyway, to not drag this thing out any longer. . .
/thread.

Yes. Manual says:
Oil grad and Viscosity:
Refer to MA-9, "RECOMMENDED FLUIDS
AND LUBRICANTS" .
Capacity:
R200, R200V
1.4 L (3 US pt, 2 - 1/2 lmp pt)
[/B]Drain plug and filler plug:
: 34.5 N·m (3.5 kg-m, 25 ft-lb)
I usually plan on two quarts (in case I spill), but it always starts spilling out the drain hole just past 1.5. I think what makes the difference is if you use a hand pump or try to cram the bottle up underneath. The drain hole is a pain to get to, and trying to "pour" into it will usually leave a bit of the quart bottle useless. . . if that makes any sense.
