I've taken my valve body off my car twice, the filter is not serviceable but it is replaceable. You will have to drop the pan though, it is not a very simple procedure and is probably not necessary.

Thanks for the great recommendation. After doing some research, what you said makes a lot of sense for cars that have not had regular changes in the past.

I'm a big Amsoil supporter so I'll be putting in Amsoil transmission fluid. You can research on the internet that there are alternative brands that meet the matic J specs

The VB is working fine, I only had SGP do the valve body. They didn't go the whole trans. I'm having a problem with 5th gear right now and its at a stop. I'm actually waiting on an answer today.

when i drained mine, i got a little over 4qts of fluid out of the transmission. I didn't do a full flush

Yes, it is safe. I did it and nothing bad happened. 7k miles later, doing another drain and fill with S-matic. 4.5 qts for a drain/fill here. The reason flushes are not recommended after a long service interval is that you can actually block off fluid channels with debris during a flush procedure due to the amount of solid material that can be picked up into the fluid. A drain minimizes transmission of debris accumulated in the pan from being swept through the transmission.

I had my tranny completely flushed at 39k. And no you cannot block off fluid channels with debris during a flush.

All they do during a flush is pour the fluid in at the same time the tranny pump is pumping the old fluid out until the fluid coming out is the same color as its going in.

I am going to do it again at 70k

I'll be doing another drain and refill in about 15K miles. it was extremely easy to do

When you do a drain/fill make sure to disconnect the lines going into the stock(or aftermarket) cooler which are going into the radiator(stock). Letting these fully drain will get out another 1.5-2 quarts of fluid.

Ok, whatever you say. That is the stated reason that flushes are not recommended. Whether you choose to believe it is up to you.

^ what you are referring to is different than what he's talking about.


He is talking about a full fluid exchange where the pump is doing the work. You are talking about having them PUMP fluid in and having an external pump doing the work.


Both of you are correct.

Just a reminder to EVERYONE... NISSAN CAME OUT WITH J-MATIC AGAIN... all tech's were told that if J-MATIC IS CALLED OUT, USE J-MATIC. IF S-MATIC IS CALLED OUT, USE S-MATIC.....GGGGGGGGGGGGGEEEEEEEEEEEEEE... i wonder why..??????.So from now on you can still buy J-Matic if you want. Why is that, i guess nissan of US should know
