Changing ATF fluid

I've taken my valve body off my car twice, the filter is not serviceable but it is replaceable. You will have to drop the pan though, it is not a very simple procedure and is probably not necessary.

Here's what I'd recommend assuming you're fluid hasn't been changed ever or hasn't been changed in a long time (40K+ miles).
1) On a COLD* engine, drain the tranny. Measure the amount that came out to the nearest 100ml and replace with the same amount. Use empty oil containers with 100ml graduations to get a drain measurement. *Tranny fluid expands 15% when hot so replacing with cold fluid can skew fluid levels.
2) Drive 100 miles or so and do the same drain/fill procedure.
3) Repeat the drain/fill procedure one more time.
4) Once completed, perform a single drain/fill every 15K miles.
Remember, heat is the leading killer of transmissions and much of the heat can be related to old ATF.
Replace with Nissan S-matic only. J-matic is no longer available. Do not use any other brand. No exceptions and I won't debate this.
From what I've seen of JATCO 5AT, the filter is technically not serviceable.

I'm a big Amsoil supporter so I'll be putting in Amsoil transmission fluid. You can research on the internet that there are alternative brands that meet the matic J specs

Quick question for your Homie..
I had my tranny rebuilt last year, and I think I want to do a fluid change (3 track days and daily driven) soon. How much do you normally get out if you do a change? Just drain it out and when it stops, should I start to fill it up again? I've only changed my fluid once, which is when I rebuilt the tranny. I have probably 9-12k miles on the rebuild.

I never really measure, I just let it sit for 30 min or so and then start to refill with a little less than full and keep checking it. How's the VB working out for you? I don't meet too many other people with the SGP trans... specially now that that went under. Let me know though, I still have contact with Mark if you need any help with it.

Yes, it is safe. I did it and nothing bad happened. 7k miles later, doing another drain and fill with S-matic. 4.5 qts for a drain/fill here. The reason flushes are not recommended after a long service interval is that you can actually block off fluid channels with debris during a flush procedure due to the amount of solid material that can be picked up into the fluid. A drain minimizes transmission of debris accumulated in the pan from being swept through the transmission.

All they do during a flush is pour the fluid in at the same time the tranny pump is pumping the old fluid out until the fluid coming out is the same color as its going in.

I had my tranny completely flushed at 39k. And no you cannot block off fluid channels with debris during a flush.
