ARGHHHH....

This has happened a couple time last week--oddly enough at the same place near the same time too--but I originally thought it was a freak accident by my fault. So I tried it again, on purpose, to test and see if it really was anything I did:

I'm getting off on an exit ramp off the interstate, I'm cruising at 75 MPH. Getting on the off ramp, I put the car in neutral to slow down. I barely get down to 60 MPH on the ramp and ease off the clutch so I can coast a bit (it's a pretty long exit ramp) to the light intersection. Right when I release the clutch, my car kills itself. Everything gone, motor stalls out, no power steering, nothing. The steering wheel even nearly starts to lock up. All I can think of doing is starting the ignition while the bitch is still rolling down the road and all of a sudden she starts running again.

I don't get it. I've done this drive before and nothing like this ever happens. Granted the clutch WAS sticking every once in a while this past summer when it was scorching hot outside-but it stopped. Recently in September I got a new ram air intake...but I wouldn't think that would affect anything like that?

Vacuum leak is my best guess. I'd take it to the dealer and have them run a check. Or you can look yourself but they can be hard to find.

 

It's most likely your intake. They cause stalling issues. Search around, I said this exact same thing to someone who was stalling out as well.

 

do you have a AEM intake? or any intake at all?

cause that is your issue. Mainly occurs to peeps with aem intake.

 

Your intake is causing the problem. The issue you describe is very common for manual G/Zs with intakes. It's a vacuum problem.

 

Ive had AEM intake this never happened to me,It all depends if you install it the right way.Quite the Issue there but you might have a leak in your Intake if thats the case,make sure the Filter is even installed right cause if it falls off you will stall at every stop if it stalls at that off ramp,well there is a leak some were else. Just hope you are not having clutch problems.. i doubt it though..

 

hmm...thanks guys. its a cold air K&N Typhoon intake. i guess i need to double check the installation of the intake and then do a vacuum leak check? how much do you think it'll cost at the dealership...

It's probably your cai. When I use to coast off the exit in neutral it did exactly what you were experiencing.

 

Guys, this is not a vacuum leak. It's a common issue with intakes on 6MT coupes and Gs. It's been know since 2004.

I would re-check all intake clamps and how tubing fits into fittings.
I had same problem when I was using CF Z tube and was venting PCV hose out through breather and not back into intake tube. Was quite scary.
Never happened just with Stillen short ram.
Edit:
If problem persists, ditch the aftermarket intake or go short ram. Stock intake is good enough for G.

 

Ive had it stall out on me before in a similar situation but its while i was rolling in neutral. I put it back in gear and dropped the clutch and the motor starts turning back over again and then there is working power brakes and steering. I cleaned my mass airflow sensor and haven't had the problem since. FYI I have the same k&n typhoon intake as the OP and its because of the oil in the filter media. It may help trap dirt but it also coats the MAF sensor and thats when this problem starts. Clean the MAF every other oil change and you will never have the problem again. You only had it this time because it was a new filter with a lot of oil.
