Grinding into reverse?

Okay team, I need your wisdom. My 6mt grinds going into reverse. Only happens about 30% of the time, and usually only on a cold start. For some reason, letting the car warm up in neutral (clutch out) for about 30 seconds completely eliminates the problem. The problem is worst when you clutch in, start the car, keep the clutch in, and go directly for reverse. (Which is weird, because you would think that with the clutch in, nothing would be moving to make the gear grind.)

What's going on here? Is there a mechanical problem, or am I just doing something wrong? I know the problem can be avoided with a brief warm up, so mostly I'm just trying to understand the mechanics of what's happening.

This sounds like every manual car I have ever owned, I think its normal and just happens because rear has no synchro. What I do is with clutch in, just put it in a forward gear first then reverse.

From what I understand, that trick works because you're using the first gear synchro to stop the intermediate transmission shaft before you engage the unsynchronized reverse gear. What confuses me though is that I don't let the clutch out at all between the time I start the car and the time I shift into reverse. With the clutch pedal always in, the transmission shouldn't be moving at all. Is it possible that my clutch is failing to disengage entirely when I push the clutch pedal down?

I think it more likely that 30% of the time when you turn off your car and the trasmission stops, the transmission is in between teeth so the next time you turn it on if you go directly to reverse, it has to grind. I'm no expert but I think you don't need to worry about this as it sounds like everything is working right. If it happened all the time then maybe its a problem.

Can anyone else chime in?

I always put it in 1st right b4 reverse no grinds 99.9% of the time. Also put it in 2nd before 1st when almost at a stop, going less than 5 mph.

i've had my coupe for 4 years now, and it has not once grinded going into reverse. maybe 10 times it has not wanted to go into reverse, so i put it in a forward gear and then into reverse, but never any grinding noise
