Need clutch advice

I have a 2006 G35 Coupe, and the clutch is starting to go. It has that smell, now it's slipping a little in the higher gears, car has 47K miles, and it's the original clutch.

I don't plan on making any high performance mods to this car, and I just want a replacement clutch.

Any suggestions on where to look? My auto shop can install anything I bring in and just charge labor, so I was looking at www.autopartswarehouse.com and wanted some suggestions.

Also, I shouldn't need to replace the flywheel too correct? I'd rather keep this as least expensive as possible, since $$$ is tight right now.

Thanks.

Flywheels generally need to be resurfaced whenever installing a new clutch, so that the clutch mates correctly and doesn't wear out prematurely. Since g/z's have dual clutch flywheels, most places will not be able to machine the flywheels. You really need to buy a new flywheel when replacing the clutch so that the new clutch doesn't wear out quickly.

If you just want a stock replacement clutch you can buy the exedy oem replacement. As far as flywheels, spec has a cheap one. Plus it weighs 28-29lbs so its very close to the stock flywheel weight which should limit the amount of chatter you get when switching from a dual mass to single mass flywheel. That would be a much cheaper option than to buy a new oem flywheel ($1,000+).Might want to also go ahead and replace the pivot ball while you are at it.

Damn. This car has turned out to be a total f'n nightmare so far. The JWT combo seems like a great deal, but everyone complains that the noise is ridiculous, so I don't even know what to do. I wouldn't mind a little extra noise if it performed way better than the stock clutch/flywheel.

My Mustang GT 1994 had almost 100K on the same clutch, and it didn't even need the flywheel replaced when the clutch finally went out.

Ya the whole dual mass flywheel situation in these cars is a real pain in the **** when trying to replace the clutch.

You do get better performance in the sense that the engine "revs" faster due to the lightened flywheel. But you will also have to rev the car more when pulling away from a light/stop or driving around a parking lot because the car will have a tendency to stall easier.

I dont think it performs way better from driving a car with that combo and hearing the chatter. The shi# is embarrassing when driving around in a parking garage or a drive through, cause It can sound like a cement mixer. IMO its not worth it. If you want less chatter and a smoother drive, get a heavier flywheel. Never the less the jwt is a popular combo and allot of people seem to like it.

I need a clutch/flywheel for my Z also but want something close to oem without the cost. I am probably going with the oem exedy replacement clutch and spec steel flywheel. That combo is 650ish$ and performs very similar to stock.

Any idea how much would a shop charge to install a clutch and flywheel like that?

I saw the nismo flywheel also, and it's similarly priced. Is the JWT combo really that loud? There is a local shop that offers a pretty good deal for all parts and labor, but I'm sure they could probably swap the flywheel for something else.

I was quoted 3-4 hrs for the labor, so what ever the shop charges by the hour (X) 3/4 hrs should be a rough estimate of cost.

It should cost the same to install any flywheel/clutch, as long as they are meant to work on our cars.

Nismo is a good flywheel. I heard it doesn't chatter at all and it gives you some performance benefit as well since its 21lbs. So you save 8-9lbs over the oem flywheel.

Hard to say about how loud the jwt combo is. Some dont mind it and some find it annoying. I'm sure if you are just driving around with the radio on, you might not hear anything. You might want to search the other threads on here about the jwt combo, and read what others have to say.

i just replaced mine on my 06 g35 coupe (had 103,000 on oem clutch) because i just wanted something different i bought the jwt clutch & flywheel combo.. What a difference.. it takes a week or so to get used to but i really recommend it

chatter.. it isn't even that loud.. it sounds like oem.. you can hear it at times but only at idle.. but when driving you dont hear it at all

if you want to hear it over the phone pm me and i'll give you my number and you can hear it for yourself.

Thanks for the input. One of the vendors here (Precision Z) can do a full JWT install plus stainless steel clutch line for $1350 out the door. That's w/ all parts, tax, labor...etc.

Seems like a pretty good deal.

Hey, not to hijack your thread but I have a '03 sport coupe w/ 122k miles and the orig clutch. The TO bearing is going (noisy first couple of time you push the clutch in) and the clutch has little life left, so I'll be changing it over the summer. I was wondering if anyone could suggest a clutch that was lighter than stock both in weight and on the pedal. Doesn't need to hold a lot of power as the car is a DD and stock. Thanks.

I think I've narrowed it down to the Exedy Stage 1 clutch and ACT Streetlite Flywheel, or the Exedy Clutch and Nismo flywheel. Maybe an aluminum Spec flywheel?

Do I need a steel clutch line also? I was going to get a new pivot ball just to be safe.

Well, I decided to just get the Exedy clutch and the ACT Streetlite flywheel from TH Motorsports and have a local shop inext to my office nstall it while I'm at work.

Hopefully I will like it. Any new clutch will be better than the one in there now, as it's slipping, it's sticking like crazy the hotter the car gets.... it's just time for something new, and I can always swap flywheels sometime down the road if necessary.

I'll keep everyone posted once it's installed next week.

Well, I have to say that I don't like this combo one bit. The chatter at idle is definitely noticeable, which I fully expected, but it isn't that bad.

What is very annoying is the transmission noise under low RPM's in any gear. If I had known it would sound like this, I wouldn't have gotten these parts.

I'm still driving the car lightly (not winding it out or pushing it) so I can't really say I notice any increase in performance.

I'm guessing I will probably wind up replacing this flywheel with a heavier one at some point.
