Final drive gear.
Final drive gear.
I'm interested in getting this final drive, for my 5at. Can anyone give me some background on how involved the installation is? Or any pitfalls for using it?

If nothing ever ended badly, then nothing would ever end.

I can't speak to the installation aspects, but the down-side includes: The lower gearing will make your engine run faster at any given MPH, so your gas mileage will suffer. At highway speeds, the faster running engine may be noisier than you bargained for, too. As the product description mentions, you will gain faster acceleration at the expense of top-end speed. Personally, I don't mind losing top-end speed, but lower gas mileage would be intolerable. My gas mileage is bad enough with the stock gearing! Also, I seem to recall there was a concern about the engine bouncing off of the rev-limiter under hard acceleration all the time. It seems that, with the lower gears, the TCM does not shift fast enough to prevent it. That's not good.

This might be a little off topic, so please excuse my musing. I'm kind of curious to know what the performance and gas mileage differences would be in a 6MT by going the other way and swapping the rear end out with an AT model. I wonder if it would even be worth it?
