5th gear syncro possibly
Everytime I shift into fifth gear from 4th above around 2k rpms and downshift from 6th you can hear a sharp grinding noise, the higher the rpms and the faster the shift the louder the grinding is. Ive looked around and made a previous thread and from what I see it seems to be a problem with the 5th gear syncro. To fix this do I need to replace the whole transmission or just repair it and does anyone have any idea how much it could possibly cost to fix? Can i keep driving in fifth or should i get this fixed right away because i need to use the highway to get to school and work five days a week. Any advise would be helpful, thanks.

I have the same problem on my 2003 G35. It grinds going in to 5th if I shift normal or fast but if I go slow there is no grind. I have an extended warranty that covers the internal parts of the transmission but only if they find broken or damaged parts inside the transmission. I am an ASE master certified tech and I am almost 100% sheer that the problem is the synchronizers but I don’t have much experience with these transmissions and I wanted to know if anyone has had their transmission torn down and if there was a visible problem that could be verified.

I phoned a transmission shop and a fifth gear synchro is around 1700 to fix, he also quoted me 2100 for a transmission rebuild and 2700 for a whole new tranny. Ive decided to get a whole new cd009 tranny put in as it sounds like the synchros are alot better with it and the synchros could go out again with just a repair. I live in Canada so it might be cheaper in the states and i plan on phoning a few more places to see if i can find a better price
