4.08 final drive to 5AT

Anybody done a 4.08 to an auto ?

I own a modified g35 in the UK and am looking for improved 1/4 mile times without forced induction

what year? if it's 08 or older (5 speed), it's not recommended... you'll never make it through 1/4 mile in 3rd gear (no matter how high you set the rev limiter)... Even 3.9 is too short (imo).

3.7 (3.692) is a good choice (you'll need to bump rev limiter and max out each gear).

If you have a 7 speed (09 or newer I believe) then it might be worthwhile (I'm not too familiar with that gen though).

It's an 03 model.

I am doing an overhaul on the car and occasionally drag race it so wanted to attempt to beat prior times

Somebody on this forum (found on google by accident) showed a youtube entry of a 4.08
hitting just over a 13 second 1/4 mile which would satisfy me

I was going the easy route of adding nos but would prefer not too

My car has modified intake headers plenum spacer de cats etc already

13 second as in sub 14 or 13.00?... I can assure you no NA VQ DE has run a 13.00.

In a nutshell, 4.08 FD is not in your best interest. 3.692 would be beneficial (but as I mentioned, you'll need to bump the rev limiter or you wont make it through 1/4 mile without shifting into 4th gear - which will kill your ET).

mid to high 13 is doable depending on track and tires - it wont happen at my tracks, but some of the guys on east coast have hit the mark.

still very impressive and not at all common... I'm certain it was with DR and in optimal conditions... and of course he's one of the ones I mentioned on the east coast... his car didnt do that here even when he was ST.

what FD is he using these days? (I've been off this forum for so long I dont even know what mods anyone is using anymore).

dude, I just went to look at his profile to see what mods he's running these days and his signature says: "04 5AT N/A 1/4 mile 13.14@107, 12.3@114 N2O"

I presume N2O as in NOS... that's not exactly "NA" as I mentioned.

^I want to say 3.7 but I'm not entirely sure. He said his best time over here was 13 flat when he was FI. I agree, those guys have a nice DA over there.

Pretty sure the 12.3 was with N2O, the 13.1 was N/A only

^^^ you're right - now that I re-read it, 13.14 must have been NA...

Anyway back on topic - OP, AT does not do well with 4.08 and dont expect to see 13, that's very unlikely... unless you happen to run the same track that Derek (dsskyline) does and you have a bunch of runs under you belt... even then, it's not likely.

Mid to high 13s (on a decent track) is doable with the right mods (including 3.7 FD).

I did my 13.1 on street tires with a 1.89 60ft N/A with 250hp!! I'm at 298hp now can't wait until it gets cold out.

I can't get my rpms high enough for DR's or slicks to work since I'm 5AT.

I've finally got a 3.7FD I remember the time you beat me outside of church's before I moved.

Weather and track dates kills you guys believe me I know. I can hit 3 different tracks over here every week if I wanted to.

If you guys ran here in these conditions you all would be mid-low 13's N/A.

Here my latest vid running in 65* weather I did my 13.1 in 40* weather.

^ nice times, shift kit chirping 2nd is awesome

If you had a 3.3 and going to a 3.7 your going to have a bit more torque, I wonder if its enough for DRs. What tires you have that can hold 2.8k RPM without spinning?

Also with 3.7 your going to have to shift into 4th

I had the 3.7 in that video with mods stated below. I can't rev that high I need a high stall TC for that. I think I can rev 2300-2500 before it starts to spin

had the 3.5 in this one minus cams, Al driveshaft and longtube headers in 40* weather.

not if you bump up the rev limiter... 7200-7500 rev limit and you can make it in 3rd (maxing out each gear). Possibly even 7K (I'm not sure, I've always had 7500 with 3.7FD)

anyone tracking their car should have tuned ECU - bumping the rev limit is a given.

Derek, what's your rev limit set at?
