I took my car to an independent shop to have some work done. When he pulled it into the shop he accidently bumped the shifter over to manual mode and the shifter got stuck in manual mode. He called me and asked if I had ever had the problem before and I told him I hadn't. He was able to get the shifter out of manual mode by taking it apart, but now I have to have the shifter in manual mode for the transmission to recognize it as being in normal drive mode. Also, the display on the dash doesn't show the "P" "R" "N" anymore. He has offered to install a new shifter, no charge labor, if I pay for the part ($400). I'm not willing to do that and may have to take him to small claims court. Any ideas on how to fix this without buying a new shifter?

That's why I never let anyone work on my car besides myself...

Sounds like an issue with the valve body unfortunately..even if he did it on accident something like this would've happened eventually. i'd definitely put up a fight to have them fix it though

I consulted with a Nissan mechanic and he said it was the shifter assembly, that there is a tab in there and when it is damaged it doesn't know if it is in manual or regular drive mode. I ordered the shifter assembly from infinitipartsusa. Part # 34901-AC30A . They call it a Device Assy - Transmission. It is about $100 cheaper than going through the dealership and the cheapest I could find it online. Since there is no way to prove the mechanic did it I'm just going to pay for it and install it myself.

This definitely does suck man. And no don't pay for the part for the free labor, he messed it up it should all be on him. It's like when an independent shop broke my TPMS and said oops and didn't want to pay for anything, like no you break it you buy it.
