Rebuilding my 03 a/t and wanting to know if 4k. Is worth it. I have no idea what the heck the owner of the shop was saying, but I was totally lost. This is what I remember

Going from a 4 plate to 9 plate

Boreing Out the tranny and putting a bigger heavy duty torque converter
Carbon fiber and thin steel parts

Transgo shift kit
Bore out the part that connects to drive shaft and doing something to it.
Big trans oil cooler. ( race version )

He kept mentioning carbon fiber, thin steel, and kept saying "RED". Idk if RED was ment as part of a brand? Or something else. Anyone wanna translate for me. 4k Is worth it?

 

It will cost a couple grand to rebuild an auto trans, I'm not a transmission tech so have no clue what he's referring to but I would recommend you get a second opinion...

If it was my car (and I was unable to do it myself) I'd buy a used, low mileage trans for the junkyard and have a local shop install it for me. Shouldn't cost more than a couple hundred for a tranny swap on a G35.

 

Contact some of the shops that offer fully built transmissions and try to find out what all they're comprised of. A tranny rebuild isn't too expensive but rebuilding with better parts will usually cost $3-4K.

 

Well, hes a very reputable trans tech. 90% of the transmissions on the race cars at our track are built by him. I had a transmission for my accord that was done by him also. M just trying to figure what the beck was he talking about. He also said that it would be cheaper if I didn't want the carbon fiber.

 

^He's probably talking about the clutch plates/packs.

 

What would be the difference from a 4 plate to a 9 plate. Obviously better, but any kind of performance goals? Or is it just to beef things up?
