Manual mode downshifting in an auto, is it safe?
I tried searching for any info or threads related to my question but didn't have much success.
I have a 2003.0 G35 5AT, 200k kilometers, running and driving well. I was curious about the consequential damage/repairs of using the "manual mode" or "sport mode" to downshift. For the record I understand this will always be a torque converter automatic and will never replicate, or replace a real manual transmission (I wish it was).
Auto or manual, we all know how much fun it is to drop a gear or two heading into a corner and accelerating out. I do have some concern however about forcefully downshifting using manual mode in a torque converter. It just seems "wrong" and feels like it puts a lot of wear and stress on the transmission. Maybe I am just not used to the way it downshifts compared to a regular standard transmission?
I don't use the manual mode often, and when I do I try to keep the downshifts as light as I can, no sudden jerking, doing my best to match the engine RPM to the transmission. I try to keep the engine RPM after downshifting lower than 3500-4000 RPM. Am I doing significant harm to my transmission?
For peace of mind and just as part of normal maintenance, I flushed and refilled the transmission oil last week and experienced noticeable improvements in shift speed and smoothness.
Auto transmission experts please chime in! Also, anyone who uses their manual mode often, have you had any unexpected issues related to your transmission?

Down shifting with a good exhaust is like music to your ears, a thing of beauty!
Safe yes, however don't move to quickly from 5th to 2nd and over rev your motor. Down shift slowly listening to your motor while you come to a stop. I've been down shifting since SLICK was new without issues...Gary
