6MT Transmission Troubles
6MT Transmission Troubles
So I'd been getting some weird grinding and thunking noises from my trans; 2nd gear would grind during higher rpm (over 5K) shifts from first, 6th would grind and be very difficult to engage. I got a thunking sound that could be felt throughout the car every now and again when shifting into first from neutral while the vehicle was at rest. It wasn't all that frequent, but during my 30K service visit, I pointed this out to my advisor. We took a quick test drive and in a wonderful turn of fate, it acted up. Got a call two days later and a new trans had just shown up. Internal failure he noted. Haven't gotten the car back yet, but I'll let you know how it feels with the new unit installed. Anyone have feedback that has had a replacement? 500 miles or 1000 to break in the new unit (got a clutch disc thrown in while it was out)?
My second gear grinds to when i shift over like 5500 from first but it is wierd it doesnt do it everyday.. my car only had about 5000 miles... it hasnt done it latley but im takin it in for service soon so i will have it checked out..
Sorry, out of town for a few days...Just over 30K.
So I've got just about 100 miles on the new trans/clutch. The first thing I noticed is that the space between the middle row (3rd, 4th) and the outer row (5th, 6th) seems to be smaller. When i first put it into fifth I was shocked how close it was. Don't know if this is the case with all the new trans' or if this was a problem with my previous unit. It could just be because it's not broken in for that matter.
It does shift 100x better. Much smoother, falls right into gear with minimal effort. It feels like it should have from day one. I nearly stalled the car pulling away as the clutch pedal kicks back out with much more authority than it did with a 30k mile pressure plate on it. Haven't had it over 4K rpms yet, but I put on a lot of miles, so we'll see how it runs under pressure soon enough. Can't wait until it's all broken in.

Just got my G back today ('03 with 37K miles).
New transmission, clutch, and pressure plate. What's the break-in period or the new tranny?
thanks,
B

Turbo G35 coupe single turbo with some goodies
hey..whats up guys? i have a 04 coupe..sometimes 3rd gear would be hard to get into..so i thought it was a synchro prob...some mechanics said it was the same prob...i went to dealer(car still under warranty only 44k miles) and told them the prob...they told me it's my clutch...so i told them if it's my clutch then why isn't every gear hard to get into...they said i have to replace the clutch they charge 2100 for factory clutch or i can get aftermarket..but i still think it's the synchro..need them to change it...any ideas how i can get it replaced?...LoL
hey guys,
i didn't want to start a new thread but i want to ask a new question.
those of you with 6MT, if you're engaged in a gear, any gear, is it possible for you to force the shifter out of gear and back into neutral? I was driving along a local street in 4th gear, not high revs, and then my hand must have accidentally nudged the shifter and the shifter came out of 4th gear and into netural. is that normal? is this even possible mechanically? i thought once u're in gear, there's no way for you disengage unless you clutch in?
