Shift *** Grinding on 6MT help!

Okay.. this problem I'm having happens when I shift from 2nd to 3rd gear frequently and when I'm shifting from 1st to 2nd gear sometimes but never both. When I shift I hear/feel this fast short-lived grinding sound that is REALLY noticable like I'm grinding something in the mechnicism under the shift *** (but not in the transmission becase It dosen't seem to me it goes that far down into the car). I thought I was shifting too fast and hard so I slowed down alot trying to glide the *** through the mechnical type shifting we have. It still happens.. does anyone know what I'm grinding? I don't think it's the gears but I remember my uncle telling me that there are guides or sensors under the shift *** that if you're not careful they can wear or break. He has a Twin Turbo 300ZX. Does anyone know what I can do about this?

Thanks - Joey Avino

Sounds to me like you might have worn synchros in your tranny.

Do you have a lot of miles on your car or shift really agressively?

If it is the synchros, you're gonna have to have it repaired under warranty.

Actually, this seems to be somewhat of a common complaint, and frankly, it worries me.

Actually, I've read way more than 15 complaints. Read some of the other forums and you'll see too.

BTW, because the G35 Coupe is so new, it is very disturbing. It's not like these cars have been out for 3 or 4 years and are starting to have synchro failures. Unless they've been severely abused, it shouldn't happen at all.

I didn't abuse it. I'll talk to the dealer at my next service.

what's pretty disturbing is I've brought my car in twice mainly for this reason (1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd not very smooth). Twice they've said it's normal and it's the characteristics of the tranny.

he's not talking about the "smoothness" he's talking about the noticable grinding.

The smoothness is not there because its a 6spd close-ratio gearbox...1-2-3 ratios are huge and thus harder to get a perfectly smooth shift. In regular 5spds, only the 1-2 shift is hard to get.

I actually just got my tranny replaced for that specific reason, so maybe you should go to a different dealer. The technician wrote that on a cold start, the trans would make a grinding noise from third. He then called the fix line, and they okay'd replacing it. Hope that helps!
