3.9 Final Drive in automatic
3.9 Final Drive in automatic
Ok i just called up BJ from 350evo and asked him all about putting in a 3.9 final drive in a automatic. He tells me it would work but hes not sure how streetable it will be. Im planning on getting the entire assembled unit with the 3.9 final drive and i even bought a 3.5 fd pumpkin for the core exchange. My question is does anybody have any experience in the 3.9 final drive for a automatic?? Im not sure how streetable it will be, i heard the 3.9 final drive makes a huge difference for the automatic compared to the 3.5 fd and i would much rather get the 3.9 fd. However, i use my car as a daily driver and i dont want anythign too crazy and not streetable. Can anybody with experience with the 3.9 fd on a auto point me to the right direction?? Also i was wondering if i was to drive on D and smash the gas after getting the 3.9 fd, would the computer be able to change the gears on its own quick enough before it hits the rev limiter?? I dont have a raised rev limiter. Thanks in advance for the help.

I only have the 3.5 fd, I dont like 1st gear as it is taking of slowly. In MM its OK, but I don't always want to take the RPMs up. The car reaches 5th [OverDrive] rather quickly - at 30MPH, give or take a MPH [variations in pedal movement] In traffic or on roads where the speed limit is low and you have to stop every block [or two] for a light the gears are prety annoying. I usually have it in MM and just stay in 3rd or something so it won't constantly be going 1-5 and then back down again 30 seconds later. I only gained .1 seconds off my 1/4 mile time... which was surprising because after driving the car 13,000 miles and paying attention to shift points / RPMs the shift definately comes earlier and the RPMs are noticably higher on the interstate. I haven't checked out if the cruise control works or not, on holidays I drive 4 hours home and just never use the cruise.
I've heard the 3.9 makes a big difference, especially if you are going from the stock 5AT 3.2 [I think? I forgot..haha]. The only downside should be the 1st at light throttle and the loss of about 2 or 3MPG on long road trips. Are you planning on going FI?

Nope just trying to make my NA car as fast as possible, without going FI. So what your saying is during drive mode the gears can be very annoying when driving at slowe speeds or in traffic conditions??? And what do you mean by annoying? like the car will start jerking alot and the ride quality becoming more rough because of the gears changing from 1-5 and 5-1 so quickly??
