Auto tranny manumatic question
Sorry if I got your hopes up. I was pretty sure I read a year or two ago that people were getting new software for their 5ATs. I guess this is what happens when I try to remember old stuff that doesn't apply to my 6MT. My bad.
Maybe I was remembering this

Newer MM = select MM and go to a stop. Tranny autmatically shifts to 1 and shows 1. And will hold 1st until you shift out of 1st. And based on what I've read from the latest reply, it will show all these gears when downshifting/upshifting.

This is why I am not sure why people say they prefer the older MM style. I *think* I remember you being one of them Jeff. I don't get it. Am I not correct that the shifts in the gears prior to the "top" gear shift at the normal points? If that is the case I don't follow why one would prefer this over the ability to string out any gear that you chose. Maybe I am missing a component here or I am misunderstanding those who say they prefer the older style.
There are benefits to both styles. I have the older style MM, and I sometimes leave it in 2 or 3 and let the transmission shift itself until I get to a gear that I want to hold. For something that feels closer to a real manual transmission, though, the newer version is better.
I am one of them. There are advantages of both I suppose. I can string the gear out as you say if I choose. BUT I have to MM all they way down to one. VS you only have to flick it to MM once to get one.
But if I want to tranny to autoshift to x gear I can just choose 4 or 3 or 2 and I won't have to auto shift to that gear. From my limited experience, it's no faster to have the auto shift vs mm shift correct? Since both will see full line pressure and shift right around redline at WOT. But you will have to have one hand on the gear shifter and I can have both hands on the wheel. No biggie going straight. But if I know I'll see 2nd gear at a turn and I want the auto to hold that gear, I can just select 2nd and mash the gas. Go though the turn in 2nd and shift up when I'm though the turn. I suppose you can also do this. But you have to flick mm and flip up to 2nd.
I guess either way, one of us is going to have to row the gears. Me rowing down if I want to get to 1st, you rowing up after you get going. If I get a newer loaner, I'll chime again with my opinion.

Well now I would have to disagree in the case of my car for part of that reasoning. My car most certainly does NOT string out the gears as far if you have it in auto. Even at WOT my car will shift at around 6000 rpms rather than hold it out until the end of the gear. No that it's a huge amount of difference but there are times when every little bit will help. LOL! The speed of the shifts don't change really from auto to MM but the rpm's at which the tranny shifts most certainly is different.
Tis a case of preference I am afraid.

Team thanks for all your input. Reading this thread indicates clearly there are advantages in having both versions. When in MM mode I usually drive around town in 3rd gear and when trying to take an aggressive turn i flick it to 2nd and then back to 3rd when I am out of the turn. So from that perspective I'm not loosing that much from a functionality perspective. I guess I'm lucky that I don't have a 03 model in which both auto shifts and MM shifts were very delayed.
I guess the question is the car any faster shifting at the higher rpm or not.
