3.9 gearing question- important

Hey guys

I have an 04 5AT coupe looking to get the different gearing off performancenissanparts.com but which can I get. I know it says under the description there that the 3.5 is for coverting 5AT to 6MT gearing but can I get the 3.9 for a 5AT? Also if anyone has done this if it is possible, can you post a review.

Next- I have around $3000 to upgrade, doing the gearing, popcharger & z-tube, grounding wires- will they speed up the shifts of the tiptronic? and the valve body upgrade on the stillen website- is it worth it? anyone have it done?

Thanks for any help I can get!

You might do some searching for detailed threads (search ISMSolutions), but in a nutshell:

You have to send a 3.5 6MT complete pumpkin (housing and innards) as a core to avoid that huge charge, IF you want the 3.9. It has to be performed on a 6MT pumpkin. So, you'll need to buy a 6MT rear if you want the 3.9 in your 5AT. Pricey!

Think about it ....I have the 3.5 gears in my AT5 . All though Im F/I . Cruising on the highway...I have no cruise control because the engine is spinning faster than the ECU has been programed for . And at 60 mph Im at 2200 to 2400rpm's . If you go to 3.9's it will be , probably 3000rpm to cruise at 60mph . I think the 3.9 is way to much gear for an every day driven car with a AT5.
The Stillen Valve body isnt near what the SGP valvebody is . I have the SGP and it shifts lighting fast . Ive read the Stillen makes some difference but not enough to warrent the cost

I had the same question in mind... Here is what Jason from performancenissan said

Hi THere,

The 3.9 final drive will fit with some other parts but your speed will be greatly reduced. 1st gear will top out around 20mph...

We recommend the 3.5 final drive off a 6MT.
We are working on a 3.7 final drive gear kit...

To fit the 3.5 gearing you will need a new LSD weither it be a VLSD or a NISMO LSD, depending on the LSD you get you may have to get new output shafts and some other parts...

The easiest solution for use with the 3.5 final drive is to purchase a complete new assembly. It comes fully assembled ready to bolt up to your car!

Install on a new complete assembly is only $180

http://performancenissanparts.com/ca...oducts_id=4286

It is $1225 for the complete assembly. Plus tax in CA.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Jason

couldn't you just swap pumpkins with a 6mt owner? I didn't think you needed a new lsd. I was thinking about switching my 6mt pumpkin with a 5at. I've a bunch of thread where guys swapped pumpkins and I could have sworn reading it was a direct swap.

If your AT you have to buy the MT LSD - the ring and pinion have different offsets and they are designed for the MT offset.

The best way and most painless way through the process is to purchase the whole pumpkin as an assembly from 350EVO direct or from Performance Nissan (MyNismo.com), pay the core, and send back your old. If you want to keep your old for 'just in case', get one from a junk yard for $500 and send that back.

Otherwise, you'll need to buy a the ring and pinion, vlsd, every shim, all seals, and bearings, and have a shop put it all in for you right the first time. You will end up spending about $600 more overall all as you'll end up buying a bunch of shims you can't return - oh yea - good luck finding the shims as well as a place willing to part with them if they have them to begin with.

If you need more info...PM me or search my posts...Rick
