Downshifting with Tiptronic

The manual shift gate (Tiptronic) does not seem to be a very good substitute for a stick, especially for downshifting.

If my RPMs are too high (for the computer) it won't downshift when I tell it to. Downshifting is not always smooth. Downshifting from second to first is very harsh unless I am stopped or going no more than a couple mph or so.

Is this the way it is supposed to be?

(Don't tell me to get the coupe, my wife wouldn't let me!)

I would disagree, I drive my car at the track all the time in manual mode. I works fine but there are a couple of things to remember. First I don't see a reason for ever going all the way back down to first and your right you have to be almost at a stop but the other gears the downshift will work fine if your coasting or braking. It will not downshift if you are on the throttle or if you are going to over rev the engine. So it's all about getting your timing right. I just posted a video (under motorsports) from the track a couple of weekends ago, watch it and listen to the downshifts.
