Grinding the Gears?

Tonite, as I was driving to blockbuster to pick up a movie, I was driving normally shifting at about 2000-3000 rpms. I was coasting down a hill and holding down the clutch. When the hill leveled out I tried to shift it into second gear and all I heard was this grinding noise from the gear. It only lasted about 1-2 seconds while the stick was moving into second. I got the stick into second, but there was resistance, hence the grinding gears. And I was depressing the clutch all the way.

What happened?

And, btw, when I park I always leave the car in first gear. When I started my car to go to blockbuster I forgot it was in gear and let go of the clutch. The car stalled and jerked forward. Could this be the cause?

Re: Grinding the Gears?

I don't think it has anything to do with starting the car in gear. Most gear grind problems I've read come from either 5th or 6th gear.

The funny thing is, I went for a long drive in my coupe, and towards the end of the drive, I opened the car up from 1st gear and grinded 2nd gear three times in a 20 minute period. I think it was due to the transmission being hot, but am not sure.

I'd sure like to know if anyone else experienced the 2nd gear grind.

Re: Grinding the Gears?

was it a hard grind or a soft grind? did u rev-match when u shifted into 2nd coasting on the hill? if so....then I have no idea but if it was a soft grind, i think it tends to make that sounds when u dont rev-match.

Re: Grinding the Gears?

Because the hill flattened out, and I was coasting at about 25mph at the bottom.

I guess I should have rev matched or put it into first.

Thanks guys.

Re: Grinding the Gears?

Matching RPMs is what the synchro does for you. If you push too hard too quickly and/or don't have the clutch in all the way you will grind 'em.

It doesn't sound too serious and I wouldn't worry about it. We all miss a shift now and then. =)

i agree with Shader, you probably tried to force the shifter into 2nd while engine speed at 650rpm and wheel speed should have been 3,000 rpm, you should always rev match (or double clutch) on a shift from nuetral.

On the side note, i have grinded 2nd gear twice before. But it was my fault both times, I tried to shift too fast when racing.
