DIY - Transgo Valve Body Upgrade
#62
Seems this is a bigger thread from looking at search results. I hate jobs like this. 1 slight mistake is catastrophic. Back in the 90's when AT's starting getting computerish I installed a shift kit in a 4L60E and with it being my first time with no internet DIY it was hell on earth. Finished it in about 2 6 hour days with a friend who was going blind at it also. The main thing was the 1-2 shift at part throttle was really aggressive. A noob or someone who might purchase the car in the future would think something was wrong. To guys who have done this upgrade are part throttle shifts very aggressive. I wished things were a little easier like Mod Mustangs. They could just up the line pressure via tune and get the same type results. I know this is a old thread but wanna hear some opinions

also i have a question... my transmission started acting funny and then then my CEL light came on. car felt like it was stuck in gear and once i was able to reset the code then the tranny would work like normal. After doing this a couple of time i was driving and all of a sudden it was like i was in neutral. i was able to coast it to gas station. I turn the car off and call a tow truck. while waiting with the car off i turn it on and put in it drive and i was able to drive it around the parking lot but it would soon go back out again. At this time the tow truck was pulling in. the next day after if sat all night started it up and was able to drive it around the parking lot and then i parked it.
My question is can this still be my valve body that is causing this to happen or will i be looking at something else. the fluid was not burn and it was not brown and also it was not low.

What? Sheeeit! I thought you meant I could actually do something about this. Damn it. Oh well. Thanks for correcting what I thought you meant as I was planning on finding this wizard you speak of tonight & I had my pimp hand cocked.
I think I'll be fine. Got the fsm, a write-up from an fx45 guy & instructions from transgo. Pretty straight forward. By the way, trango on ebay for $189. Called Summit, price match + a buck & got it for $188. Also got all new trans. pan bolts & gasket (as is mentioned in the fsm) + 8 q's of matic s from a local dealer for a buck sixty. Bam.

Did you ever figure out what the problem was? I think I know. Spoke w/several people from the top performance trans specialists and you may have done nothing wrong. They see many of these very same issues + many incorrect installs for the re5ro5a transmission, whether it be nissan, infiniti, truck or car. Lovely. If install went well, wires are good & plugs are good your tcm is most likely toast. Minor voltage jolt can destroy tcm & is out of one's control. I pulled the neg. batt. term. before starting transgo install & still may have popped the pos tcm. Nissan trans computers are apparently crap & you never know who has the ticking time bomb in their trans. I was told that a very large % of the tcm's can pop, sometimes by doing something as simple as changing the battery! Trans computer & v.b. not sold separately and pricey. I'm currently diagnosing my issue w/transgo & with the real possibility of having to spend $1k-ish on v.b/tcm + having to tow the vehicle to the dealer & pay them to program the new tcm & this is without shift kit! New v.b.'s/tcm's apparently do not have this problem. I just quit smoking (vaping rules) after having done so for a long time & am thrilled about that so frankly, f this trans & f this car. I'll throw it in the gutter & go by another.

That's not a terrible idea but not necessarily a good one either. Did that once a long time ago. Different car, different part but long story short the part I got from the bone yard was bad as well. To grab a trans from a bone yard is going to cost about as much or more than a vb/tcm. Either way, ain't no way in hell I'm getting underneath a car @ a bone yard. Found some sources for a rebuilt complete unit programmed w/lifetime warranty but for now, shipped it to IPT & will be there tomorrow.
Two vb/tcm's? I feel your pain. How did it happen?

Well the first time it happened i stopped at a toll booth to pay the toll and when i went back in Drive, the car just shook and reved and nothing happened. After ecu reset i was able to get 2nd and 3rd gear only. so limped at 30mph. Car was brand new like i said at 2k miles. Dealer took a week to figure out the issue and it was the whole VB failure. So trans was fine but electronics were shot. Same thing happened at 100k. this time i thought it was the whole trans as I was racing the car for years prior. Gut feeling told me it was same as before and it was. I ended up buying a used trans with 43k miles on it for $1,100 with 1 yr warranty from LQK. I ended up selling my old trans for 400.
Had i known now then what i know now, I would have swapped out the VB/TCM from and rebuilt my own trans with better parts.
Going fwd i am swapping my oem radiator to koyo and going stand alone oil trans cooler with thermostat to keep temps down to increase longevity
