Small Block Conversion??

I love my G Coupe, but I never stop wishing for more power, or more specifically, torque. Although I despise the bow-tie brigade, I can't help being a little envious of the power and reliability of their aluminum small block. I realize modding the factory 3.5 for serious power is an expensive proposition. That makes me wonder . . . has anybody ever done a small block conversion on a G or at least looked into it? Does anybody know if it will even fit?

As in putting a 347 stroker in a G? That would be awesome!

For the old datsun 240s, they do a lot of small block installs, but I've never heard of that done to a G or a Z.

I love the idea! How can I find out if it would fit? I'm searching all over the place but cant seem to find a site showing dimensions, etc...

Anyone see the pictures on page2 of that thread? Is that an open(filterless) throttle body?

I always liked the LS1 motors for some reason, maybe you can consider that swap. I was planning on doing an LS1 swap in a 3rd gen Rx7 before i got my coupe.

What about mating harnesse, etc.? It's not too bad dropping a '71-based, carb'd 350 small block into a '70's 240Z... ...but getting an LS1 to jive with the modern G isn't going to be so simple. That said, I also think the only way to go (with a V8 swap) is to source the motor from a recent Corvette or Z28 to keep weight (and distribution) relatively close to OEM.

Better find a way to make the transmission fit as well... ...or stick with skinny tires in back.

It would probably take about $20-25K to swap in an LS1 and do a quality job. You'll loose stability control, traction control, and most likely the ABS because you'll have to remove the electronic throttle. Don't forget the tranny too. The Nissan/Infiniti tranny won't work.

I would bet an LS1 is only about 1-2" longer than the VQ35 and the LS1 is significantly narrower and potentially lighter. Getting a solid 400whp out of an NA LS1 is cake. With it's immense powerband and a stalled auto, a 3,500lbs G35 coupe could easily see low 12s/high 11s without any of the headaches of forced induction.

I think you're better off just buying a used C5 Z06 and keeping the coupe.

I'd suggest, stay infiniti. go for an m45 engine. i know there arent a lot of parts, but im sure it would cost the same to get that amount of power off the m45.

Holy crap that is an ugly Z. Must be a drifting thing.

Hate to be the old guy here, but you're far better off trading in your G and putting that money you'd spend into a new car of your choice. A G is a great car at $35k. A G with an engine swap cobbled together is a terrible car for $60k.
