First oil change

Hi,

I just got my coupe. the dealer said that the first oil change is at like 5000 miles I think, but I keep reading here that some people change it at 300 or 1000 miles for the first one. Which one is better. I heard that its even better to change the first one later than your usuall oil intervals but poeple here seem to believe otherwise. Could someone who has ACTUAL knowledge on this give me some advice and also support his point with giving some technical facts?

Thanks

I wouldn't say I have "actual knowledge", but it's common sense. Change it at 1000 miles. Consider it cheap insurance for the longevity of your engine. Most engine wear occurs on the initial startup as the parts start to wear and seat. it's only about $15-$20 bucks in parts and it certainly can't hurt your engine so why not. Getting out those little shavings that were left from the manufacturing and seating of parts is the main reason why people recommend a quick first change.

From service dept at my Infiniti dealership, they said wait till about 3k since these engines already come "broken in." I was going to do it at 1k, so I'll compromise at ~2k. I figure, it can't hurt right?

Change it every day if you want? The owners manual has a recommendation that 90 days 3,750 miles is necessary to prolong longevity [beyond warranty] however to maintain warranty all one needs to do is 180 days and <7501 miles.

Many owners do not understand that they are obligated to maintain oil level and that they must check the oil level and add as necessary between changes.
If the usage exceeds 1 quart per 1,000 miles [after say 7500 miles] they should have dealership begin oil consumption tests [every 1,000 miles EXACTLY] to get in line for replacement engine.

You have about a 1:1000 chance in getting a thirsty one.....from my experience.
