i have a 2004.5 5AT coupe (slightly heavier than your sedan) with a 3/8" MD spacer and K&N for mods.
I had a ss supercharged with a loud exhaust try to take me along a stretch of road on 3 separate occasions - from a roll going about 25-45 mph and it could not do it. I would pull, but only slowly in 2nd and much harder in 3rd.
From a stop, I don't know...
I don't think you'll have a problem (from a roll) but you need to keep it in high rev (using MM mode) - you can toy with it, but don't sleep on the car. It's got less power but it's also lighter.
i wouldn't have bet any money on it - if you screw up a shift, you might lose but that's the case with just about any race.

Is his stock? Then it'd be close, but you should be able to beat him. That's assuming he can shift well as those come only in manual. But, it'd be close. This coming from a GM-lover as well. But I might add, those cars FEEL SOOOOOOO much freaking faster than they are. They feel like they're doing 60 in under 6 seconds. It's just got a ton (for an I4) of torque right off the line. They're fun, good cars.
Also, the Ecotec 2.0 that is in that as well as the Saturn Ion Redline (essentially the same car mechanically) are tops for modification in the compact/I4 category. There's a reason why a Cobalt SS with the Ecotec 2.0 broke the 200 MPH speed barrier, and why they can eat VTEC's, etc all day and all night long on the track and at stoplights.
