Thinking about cams?
Thinking about cams?
Ok... I haven't really seen too many people putting cams on there G unless they're going F/I... I've been searching around for cams and came across the Nismo R-Tune cams, but they're for the 350... I was wondering if anyone knew if these cams with work for the G35 cuz we have the same motor? Thanks
Yes, but it's my understanding that these are only for the non-RevUp motor. If that's what you have, go for it. There have been more than a few around here who have run them on NA applications. Likewise, there are at least a couple who are using or have experimented with their own custom grinds.
its a pain in the *** ur engine has to be lifted out. the 10-15 solid hp ur going to gain isnt worth the 1500 install charge. unless you do it yourself. i no someone who has them and his car is fast, but he has alot of custom work done to it also
I am Reinstalling stock cams in z today at work.
motor does not need to come out.
If I did not find the guy that installed cams bent #1 intake valves
this Z would be running in one day.
I am so glad I decided to do a leek down with the cams out !!!

Its $1200 labor to install the 4 cams. Unless you are an experienced VQ mechanic, you won't be doing this yourself either. So, $2200 for 10-12 peak HP. Get a good catback with testpipes/HF cats and you're there for half the price.

key words are ------ experienced VQ mechanic
not your bud that used to work at ......
you can do the cams in less than 8 hours if you know what you are doing. cams dont really make sense to put in these cars unless you are rebuilding the engine, then it is a matter of picking up either stock cams or aftermarket cams when you put the motor all back together. the money vs hp is not worth doing them by themselves...
I'm running the NISMO cams on my G, and they're great. Very slight difference at idle and low RPM's, but they def come to life in the mid to higher end of the RPM band. The difference is quite noticeable! The engine most definately needed to come out for the cams to go in. If you don't pull the engine out, you'll need to drop the transmission and work on it from both sides, unless you have smurf hands. You're going to also need a number of misc gaskets, and seals that'll set you back around $80 to complete the job. It's a heck load of work, but IMO its worth it.
Cams will work on the G35. However, make sure you think long and hard before doing it. Be sure to do your homework.
The type of cams are very important. Some are more aggressive than others and can actually make your day to day drive a lot more rough.
Find a nice mild set of cam and then upgrade the throttle body. You'll most certainly see gains!
Again, to take advantage of the cams....
1)Get a quality set of cams (research well)
2)Throttle body upgrade (check with Crawford Z on this)
3)Get your ECU re-flashed.
