ECU = Engine Control Unit
ECM = Engine Control Module
Same device.
ECU has become the common term on this and most forums.
ECM is what Nissian/Infniti calls the component in their shop manuals.
There's also a TCM (Transmission Control Module) for G35s/350Zs equipped with an auto transmission.

The ECU is adaptive.. that is, it learns your driving style and adjusts itself to suite your driving behavior. The idea behind resetting it is to clear it's memory of break-in driving, granny driving, slow cruising, etc. so that you get better performance. You don't have to clear it, you can just drive aggressively for a day or two and it will re-learn.
