Lost control on Michelon Pilot Sports

Just a heads up and recommendation to everyone.

Our tires take a LONG time to heat up. Please keep that in mind because i nearly killed myself a couple of days ago.

I made a quick lane change, and all of a sudden I was facing the median going 70 on the highway, with 10 cars behind me. Then swerved back and faced the other wall- on the right. Then swerved again to face the median- again. Fishtaled this way 4 or 5 times between ALL 4 LANES then finally straightened out.

Now, I am a fan of drifting and have tried it a few times. But, this time it scared the living crap out of me. I thought I was going to die.

I did not do this on purpose, I totally lost control, why you ask? Because of the Michelon Pilot Sports. They take FOREVER to heat up and get grip. A good 10 minutes of driving needs to be done before you have a decent amount of grip on the road.

So a note of advice to everyone still on pilots... Keep VDC on for the first 10 minutes of driving, especially this coming winter (and for those who live in sub 40 degree weather).

Re: Lost control on Michelon Pilot Sports

Thanks for the info, I'm a little concerned with winter coming, i have no alternative to the pilot sports. Granted we don't get all that much snow here in St. Louis. and everyone keeps saying how bad the G handles in the snow.

Scary stuff, glad your ok. I try and always have VDC on when driving on the freeway, but off everywhere else. Can be hard to remember to turn it back on however.

Re: Lost control on Michelon Pilot Sports

Hey Dunbar, I went through last winter in my G35S, as long as I left VDC on I was actually very pleased with the stability. I turned it off one morning with some snow on the roads, because not many people were out... it's about like being on ice skates.

Re: Lost control on Michelon Pilot Sports

well i also have winter ties for my G and they are great and as he said its best to leave the VDC. But i totaly agree with u about the Poilts needing to be heated up. I also almost crashed. Last night i was taking my friend for a quick little trip around the block. And damn i made a 90 degree turn at about 22 and over the summer i could do that with ease but dman i totaly lost the rear end. When i went to comfinsate i say the other side of the road. I almost went into a ditch. I will be happy when i get rid for there poilts. But on a side note after 4 or 5 burn outs they were great

It just started to snow here in cleveland so i gotta get my snows on. 2 night is not going to be fun if we get any acumulation

Yikes-- glad you're okay, man! That's not a fun situation to be in, I imagine. Congrats on driving your way out of it,

Re: Lost control on Michelon Pilot Sports

Duuuuude, You got away with one ------- a cheap lesson.
It happened to me recently too bro. I was in a hurry and it was cold, so traction wasn't good, pulled out in front of someone, the tires spun 'cuz they were cold, and the VDC kicked in and killed the engine. WOOOOOOOOOOW. It was close enough to make my heart pound. Talk about feeling useless and stupid.
It seems to be typical of these sport pilots. They're great in the hot summer, but add in a little cold weather and traction evaporates.
I'm thinking that when the temp goes below 50 say in October sometime, that's time to change to snows, problem is that presents more traction issues.
One things for sure, I'm not replacing the Pilots. Once they're gone, I'll go with something else. In the meantime, I'll have to be very careful in the cool weather, and I'll be very choosey when the VDC gets turned off too. That sytem can be a PITA, but a real lifesaver too.
Time for snowtires soon bro. These pilots are aweful in the snow. You don't want to be late getting them off.
Thanks for the headsup. Many here will be first time riders in the upcoming cold conditions and winter. UGGGGGG
Later, and no more 'drifting' LOL (J/K).

Re: Lost control on Michelon Pilot Sports

jsut be glad the coupe is as stable as it is. In any other car you probably would have rolled. try this as well: Don't overcorrcect when the back end comes around. I have lost control and it takes only a few degrees of correction on the steering wheel to bring it back around. BTW, Sedan owner's I have noticed thesame thing on the Goodyear GS-D's. they take a while to warm up.

Re: Lost control on Michelon Pilot Sports

Good advice and glad you're ok. But, do I understand you correctly: it sounds as if you'd turned off the VDC and also had cold tires, then jumped on the loud pedal. Bad recipe, good for indigestion. I might suggest some other tires as well, such as Yokohamas or even the Bridgestone S03 PPs. Altho, the Pilots do hold pretty well in the summer, I'd bet the S03s are as good. Just my two pennies.
