3 Years' Worth of Oil Analyses, '03 sedan
Whoever's interested, clicky the linky... http://theoildrop.server101.com/foru...e=0#Post779193
I've been performing used oil analyses since July 2003 with 15,000 on the odometer. I now have 70,000 miles and 11 oil analyses to show during that time.
My G does not seem to care for Mobil oil at all, neither the synth nor dino oils. I switched to Pennzoil Platinum synth 2,300 miles ago, and I'm very eager to view the UOA results at 4,500 miles.

I've been a member over at BITOG for several years and did not realize they began requiring registration... here are the results.
<y VQ does not like Mobil, dino nor synthetic. Any wear metal that shows in excess of 2ppm per 1,000 miles, I think is high.

lots of data there, can you decipher it for us? what does it all mean. they mention going upto 5500 mi on the next change so 5k seems to be like a good interval for syn oil. But I was looking at the dino and it had less iron and lead, even the 4506mi interval, so are they saying dino is better for our engine?

- dino vs. synth,
- don't use it before break-in
- synth causes oil seals to leak
- dino isn't good for more than 3,000 miles
- Mobil1 is the best
- Pennzoil is good but not like Amsoil and Mobil
- German Castrol all the way...
- etc, etc, etc,
My personal belief is that a best oil is the one that performs best given:
- the engine its being poured in
- your driving style
- whether you do short trips or long trips
- cold or hot weather, or a combination of both
... and there are still more factors.
In my situation, it would appear that whether I use synthetic or dino from Mobil, the results are less-than-perfect, particularly where lead and iron wear are concerned. In my situation, the conventional Pennzoil dino oil out-performed Mobil 1 synthetic, Mobil Clean 5000 and 7500. I'm currently running a fill of Pennzoil Platinum synthetic and will do another UOA at about 4500 miles. Depending on the numbers, I will then determine whether to leave it in longer or use another oil, or whatever.
Unfortunately, even with all the data I've collected, I cannot say that another G35 will have similar results using the same oils. I cannot state that one oil is better than another. I've seen other Mobil1 reports from other VQs that show much lower wear metals. Maybe I need to untie the brick from my right foot...

Check out the website for Blackstone Labs and click the Reports link, it will tell you what the prescence of these elements mean. http://www.blackstone-labs.com/
... so 5k seems to be like a good interval for syn oil.
I've been using Mobil1 in my wife's Sequioa for the last three years and it performs flawlessly. My UOAs have confirmed that I can go 10,000 miles between changes easily (with this engine, my wife's driving style, etc). But we can see that running synth in my G for that long would not be a great idea. Noone knows how long synth is good for... it all depends.
www.bobistheoilguy.com is a good place to learn about oils and read of others' experiences, although it's gotten a little watered down since I found it 4 years ago. Lots and lots of data and lots and lots of opinions. A lot of folks on there claim to be engineers, some may work in the industry, others are just joes like you and me trying to figure out what it all means. But it's a great place to research if oil does interest you.
